Looking for a Welding JIG design

Post by Joe Jones »

I want to build ... something ... outside of my shop. It will be for welding angle, square and rectangular tubing etc.

Right now I have gone full redneck  using a metal cart with 2x4s clamped to the top, and using flat washers as spacers to TRY to get a flat, level surface to set up frames for welding. It is one ridiculous thing to see, but it works.

I'd like to build a jig that sits outside, and has the ability to provide a completely flat and level frame surface, so that I can have the joints suspended for complete welding without needing to flip over a tacked frame, etc. I would like it to rotate on the horizontal plane to access all sides while all of the components are in place.

Does any such thing exist already, or do I have to start from scratch?

I build a multi-purpose welding jig some time back. Give some thought as your needs and configure a assembly that fits your needs. I can break mine down for storage, and it has large casters on it for rolling around to access different areas for welding. I have different optional attachments for different projects, and different positioning.

That's the ticket!

I made my own motorcycle tow truck back in 2004. The homemade bed was 8' x 12' in length, and very heavy. I did it by building similar stands ...

I have to say, I was anxious about whether or not I could pull off the project in my driveway, with limited tools. I ended up building a wooden structure 24'x32' to build the truck inside. I made the building modular, so I could disassemble it and sell it after the project was done.

More than that, I was hoping I would not run into an OOPS! along the way. While still owing some $20,000.00 on the truck, I cut it in half, to make my own extended length frame, and all of the rest. I thought, "If they come to repossess the truck, I'll have to say ... The front half is over there ... and the back half is over there!"

If anyone else has any examples or tips on building one of these, please post up. I need to build a rotisserie for my jeep restoration this winter and am looking for ideas.

Here is one I built a few years back. The length is adjustable to fit different length of bodies. It also had steerable wheels on one end (not visible in the photos).
