ok, very new here. I'm sold on the Mach 3 software for now, "will work with my controller". I use inkscape already for other things. Do i need anything else?

You need software such as SheetCam to create the G-code. Mach 3 reads the G-code.

You may also need a CAD software package unless you are only doing art type work. There are many DXF or SVG files you can download from here, use the search function in the upper right to look around.
