Cleaning oil on cold rolled?
What is the preferred method to get cold rolled steel clean? I'm talking about the oil on the sheets from the supplier. I've tried acetone, brake cleaner, windex, etc... It usually ends up using a lot of cleaner and a few different towels to get pieces actually clean which eats into my bottom dollar. Is there a quick and inexpensive way to get the oil off? I was thinking of building a narrow vat to keep solvent in or something to eat the oil off.

I use lacquer thinner and a rag. Doesn't take much.

Just a note about brake cleaner! Unless restrictions have removed them from the market, there are some brake cleaners refereed to as chlorinated that can be dangerous when mixed with mig or tig welding because of the combination of heat and the inert gas of argon. The result is phosgene gas which is notable from WWI. Very nasty stuff to say the least!AKmud wrote: ↑Sun Jun 28, 2020 9:32 am What is the preferred method to get cold rolled steel clean? I NEVER use brake cleaner. I know there are 2 different kinds of which only one is dangerous but after reading an article about a gearhead that almost died from using it, I stay away from it. His health was permanently affected.

I have good luck with acetone. Just a splash on a fiber rag does the trick. It dissipates quickly and leaves no residue.
