OK, so the long story short.
I just got hypertherm powermax 1000 g3, old as earth plazma cutter, for my project.
Found this forum, while searching for the info related my pm1000 problem, just trying to connect to single phase instead of 3ph.. Just want to start cutting my Land rover defender chassis, need lot of cutting and welding typical landy
Just saw that here is a lot of interesting info, also would like to share my story here, might be someone will need it.

Yes, tin worm. I got my lady like that, it has a lot of things to be repaired, but I will do it, I always wanted to have it, so there is a chance to save one of these

tin worm = rust

unfortunately when they built the original land rovers (series 1, series2, series 3, 90, 110, defenders) they built a steel ladder frame chassis and overclad the body with aluminium panels pop rivited to a steel supporting frame and bulkheads

all this nice aluminium in contact with steel + the kind salt applied to our roads means not only does the steel corrode when the mud is stuck to all the crevices of the ladder frame chassis.... but it's aided by salt and galvanic action... meaning the aluminium panels bubble and blister too (lessened with some of the last ones made though)

oil leaks on a Landover are a good thing.... you know it's got oil in it.... and it doesn't rust as quick.... start to worry when there is no oil on your driveway

True, was reading many horror stories online, related rust and other landys problems.. Looks like best thing to do while restoring them, add something like silicone gasket or something like it, between aluminium and steel.. Will make some pictures of my joy, so others can decide if they want to get such a money pit

I've used neoprene / nitrile foam rubber on mine in various locations as rubber strips and also using hole punches on the neoprene foam rubber sheet to make rubber insulating and waterproof washers.

note it is neoprene / nitrile foam (ie compressible) rubber sheet...

I took my time with the bulkhead but had it (phosphoric) acid dipped and the initial steel protective coat

used the plasma cutter to make various replacement brackets.
I use sheetcam, scanything to copy brackets sometimes as it's faster than measuring sometimes

Welcome to the forum! Thank you guys for the tin worm education, had no clue. Quite fitting. I though galvanic corrosion resulting from steel/aluminum contact was pretty much common knowledge, at least in the metal industry. I men, did the pop rivet guy on the assembly line not know or what?

By the way, back to my pm1000 problem, maybe anyone had that issue before.
So I have got used plasma cutter, it works no problem from 3ph power.

According specs, it should be able to run from 1ph socket as well, so as was shown in the manual, I just disconnected L3 , and left L1 and L2 but it shuts off straight after a spark, there is youtube link as well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuOWAA9HQgs
According manual, it has low voltage, but how it could be, if it's not tripping the power breaker...
I am using same socket on welder, and no problem at all.
Any ideas ?

how did you wire L1 and L2?

can you provide a photo of the rating plate as there are I believe two variants (at least ) of the pmx1000

Thanks for the "Tin Worm" expilation, I have a Hypertherm PM65 and it is wired as the book shows for 220 volts AC. Have you tried to contact them via email to the tech services. They show many countries offices phone numbers but none in the UK email should get you there.

you may need to remove the filter from the CE unit (it will say "CE" on the rating plate

if you read page 3.5 or pdf page 46/87 of the operator manual it tells you that the CE model is only three phase.... hence I suspect that the filter is inducing a current in the unused phase....

hence if you remove (bypass the filter) the single phase L + N will get fed through directly to the bridge rectifier. (see last page, top LHS of service manual)

There is back plate from my pm1000 , also board with connection as i got it, and I tried to connect it only by removing L3.

it is a CE model , confirmed in the manual and on the rating plate

it is 3phase only, confirmed on the rating plate

you will need to make up three short leads to bypass the filter board in the. lower right of your photo to go from the switch to the main PCB.

and remove the CE jumper as denoted on the schematic

watch the single phase current as it could be high (~45A), especially if you are on a domestic supply and have a compressor running too
