Pricing for round slugs

What would you charge for say 3" round slugs of aluminum 1/8"?

I was thinking $2-3 each but just lost the bid when someone else came in at $25 shipped for 20 pieces

I paid $0.03472/in for 1/8" AL at my last purchase. For 9 in^2, that would be ~$0.31. So, your bid would be $1.41, and my calculations put me at $1.46. I added a bit of waste material. Looks like we would be in the same ballpark. FYI. I was just curious to see how your figures compared to mine.

$1.46 would be product only. Shipping fees would be in addition.

This is a BS bid. I would ask to see the bid. It would take half of that to mail them across town. So the other bidder is supplying metal and cutting them for around .62 cents each. I think someone is BSing you or they have a idiot for their other bidder.

So my last aluminum I bought was 25 pounds (3 pieces 34" x 20") for $77. (it was 60" and I had it sheared down to 3 pieces). And I bought these as scrap leftover from a local place. New would of been more money

So figure at 1 sheet of 20"x34" cost $25, I would use up roughly 50%-60% (thinking in my head). So I'd be into it for $9 for material roughly, plus $7/shipping. Doesn't count my time, setup, drawing, nesting, consumable use etc. So to make a whopping $9 to even match the other guys price isn't even worth it for me.

That's what I'm saying! I told the guy the very best I could do is $2 each and that's only because I want his business and know he does a lot of work.
At the very least 20 pieces at $2/each right off the table and make it an even $40 and I'll cover shipping. Since he is only 2 hours away I can mail it for $6. I would eat a little crap to gain his business but I can't work for free.

I would be $1.17 each, shipping is extra. All my stuff like that is FOB, if they want a freight quote it's $10 just to give them a number, and then, it's a high number just to make sure I'm covered. That being said, I should be able to get those in a USPS flat rate box so postage would be $7, and an additional $5 for me to mess with it. So, I would be at around $35 delivered, or $23.40 plus shipping. That includes material.

Each 2'x2' piece in 1/8" 5052 is roughly $30-35 each

A lot of time companies have slugs left over from another job. I have a 5 gallon bucket full of 2.95 slugs that I just kept off another cut. So ya if someone wanted 20 for $25, I would do it. good money for scrap

I bought a 48X96 .125 5052-H32 sheet of aluminum in the Los Angeles area for $134.16. It was 56 pounds @ $2.3958 per pound.
Delivery was free since the order include several sheet of 16 and 14 ga CRS. Not sure but I think if the orders are over $300
they do not charge for shipping and its next day service.

Gamble- I would stick to my guns on pricing as well and avoid any price wars, that starts a race to the bottom (especially in your first dealing). You can always lower your prices, it's much harder to raise them on a client after they've bought at a certain price.

Give it a few days and reach out to your potential client by phone; explain to him that even though you couldn't earn his business on this order, you would be happy to take him to lunch so you can discuss possibly working together in the future. Explain the factors that influence your pricing and advise him that if he can send you more work, your pricing to him can probably be adjusted slightly. If you both understand each other's situation, there is a better chance that you can work together in the future.

If you can't link up with him in the short term, save his contact information and follow up with him in a month or so to see if he has any more work needing quoted. This may have not been an opportunity lost, it may have been an opportunity gained by him just reaching out to you. At least now you've been introduced and can build on that as time goes on... If he's a regular buyer of cut parts, he'll need your services at some point (it's just a matter of time and circumstances).
