bidding on a big job. need help....

Post by slauk84 »

I need to come up with a price for cutting 730 of these out of customer supplied 1/4 CR steel. I figure I can nest 38 into a 4'x4' half sheet (my table is only 4'x'5) I ran through sheetcam and plasma price spreadsheet and it is coming up with a little over $10 a piece!! $7,300 seems a little high to me. Maybe I'm doing somthing wrong. I don't want to bid too high or cut my throat coming in to low either.

Any input would be greatly appreciated

I have no idea how you are figuring your pricing, but I would be at around $4 each, cutting only. Figure another $1 each for cleaning, and if you break it down by the part, prob another $1.50 each for unloading steel off the truck, racking it, placing it on the table, and removing the skeleton. I would say I would be around $6.50-7 each out the door for clean parts.

That's nesting 35 on a 48" x 48" sheet, I can probably load, cut, clean, and unload one 48"x48" sheet per hour, it's only about 40 minutes of cutting. Probably figure in 24 hours total to complete the entire job, or, pushing close to $200 an hour gross. After electricity, abrasives, consumables etc I would still be looking at $150 / hr net profit easy.

Total I would be around $4745 or somewhere close to that. That is for customer supplied material.

Now, again, what I charge may not make a difference to what you charge, we aren't in the same market or area of the country.

I don't waste my time with the calculator, I use a per sq foot all inclusive price for different materials. Just winging it off the top of my head figuring 76 per 4x8 sheet, I came up with $7200. So I do not think you're far off, but somebodies going to under cut you. For me personally, I'm not hungry so my table doesn't get turned on unless I make my margins.

I wouldn't think that Texas and North Carolina would be that much different. I've seen Shane do quite a few detailed breakdowns and he covers all the bases. Bottom line, pay yourself what you think you're worth or $100 an hour, which ever is more. :)

WOW I couldn't get that here in North Carolina but then again everyone in NASCAR country has a CNC plasma. After looking at your drawing I am assuming 1 pierce and about 50 cut inches each. Most of my cutting is custom art which I can charge more for but for pre-engineered pieces like this with the customer supplying the material I would be at $4305.00

Pearce .15 each x 1 = .15
cut inch .10 per inch x 50 = 5.00

cost to cut each part $5.15
$5.15 x 730 parts $3759.50

clean up $1.00 each x 730 = $730

total cost $4489.50

Cut easy in 8 hour shift
Soak overnight and hit with flap disc if needed? Total time 12 hours
$4489.50 divided by 12 hours = $374 per hour.

Some will say this is too cheap but I rarely loss a quote and my table runs all the time.

I would be at $10.30 each. My nesting software shows 35 to a 4' x 4' sheet.

This is cutting only, maybe a dollar more a part for clean-up/material handling. It's a rough estimate not exact on cutting inches, etc....

Wow,

I'd do that job for $3.5K (although I wouldn't complain at more).

If it took me 3 whole days and I allow $500 in expenses (which it wouldn't be), I'm getting $1000/day or $125/hr. I'd welcome plenty reasons why that's way too cheap.
