Beat up copper look

Has anyone ever done anything like this? Looking for ideas on paint options.

I get a similar look by using Copper FX as a base and then misting Pewter FX over it and let sit until the color darkens to where I want it. It will cause the copper FX to turn brownish red. I also get a similar look with some of their other products like Rust FX.

Use only cold rolled, soak in muriatic acid to remove dross and clean, then polish with 120 grit flap disc. The add your patina.

I'm glad you brought up the acid bath. What do you use for a tub and how long will the muriatic hold its potency? Grinding slag is too time consuming and adds a ton of debris to find its way to my paint.

I use a DEE ZEE tool storage box part number 6537P. You can find it on Amazon for $99 or less. It is 40' x 28' x 18' The inside is a little smaller. I cut one piece that's 36' x 20' and it fits with room to spare. It has a hinged lid with a rubber seal that keeps the smell in. The lid is also made to be locked with a pad lock. I mix my acid 50/50. I buy a 5 gallon bucket for $30 and add to 5 gallons of water. My first batch lasted a year. This batch is now 2 months old and working as good as it did the first day and I use it daily. Hope this helped.

I only get this look when I need it to be smooth and shiny. I would use Copper FX from SteelFX and have the metal a little "disressed" and wait a bit longer before rinsing. I use cold rolled as well.

(from Bill)...RUST F/X™ is also a good choice, but the real "look" in the image is from distressing the steel prior to adding a patina. I'd consider using a matte clear after the patina & you'll be home free!

If you are soaking and muriatic for the dross anyway, it seems to me it doesn't matter if you start with cold rolled or hot rolled. The muriatic attic acid will remove the mill scale from the hot rolled just as easy as it removes the dross from the cold rolled. Isn't this correct?

I use the cold rolled because it is cheaper and it seams to clean up a lot quicker with less effort and time is money my friend.

1) find CR available locally
2) cheaper than HR!

Color me green with envy. At some point I want to be burning through enough to justify a delivery...then I can get CR! Lol
