RE: Using Muriatic acid on steel used for cooking
I was building a meat smoker and wanted to remove the mill scale from the metal I was cutting up for the smoker before I welded it up. But then I started getting concerned that maybe the muriatic acid could still be absorbed into the metal and when I cooked on it I would end up poisoning myself or others. Usually when I remove stuff from the acid I wash it in water and then grind it down some more with rotary flap disks to remove the final mill scale residue and to kind of polish the metal. But steel is porous and I was concerned that for cooking this process might not be such a great idea. Does anyone have any thoughts on this topic. It might be a really dumb question.

soapy water and I'd expect no issues. You're more likely to get cancer from the charcoal/wood burning in the smoker.

Hey edclanton1 you will have no problems buddy. Read below.
Muriatic acid is one of the names for hydrochloric acid. It is also known as spirits of salt or acidum salis. "Muriatic" means "pertaining to brine or salt". The chemical formula for muriatic acid is HCl.
Uses of Muriatic Acid
Muriatic acid has many commercial and home uses, including:•industrial synthesis of vinyl chloride and polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
•food additive
•gelatin production
Muriatic also occurs naturally in gastric acid to digest food.

Thanks for all the info. That's great to know. Its so much easier and cost effective than grinding.

Another common use to put your mind at ease is balancing PH levels in swimming pools. My neighbor is a chemical distributor and sells thousands of gallons to the city for swimming pools. Which is why you can find it in the pool aisle at home depot
