Powermax 85 question

Post by acm329 »

I have a small home based shop with only a 100 amp electrical service. I am going to run another 220 outlet dedicated to my 85 that I haven't gotten yet. My question is what size breaker how much does it draw . Thanks

The Powermax85 input current draw is based on what thickness you are cutting. Under normal conditions, when cutting the thickest production cutting recommended (1-1/4", maximum pierce of 3/4") the unit will draw about 58 amps if your line voltage is 240 volts, single phase. If your line voltage is 230 volts, it will draw 60 amps, and if your line voltage is 208 volts it will draw 68 amps. If you are cutting thin gauge materials...the unit will draw less than 20 amps.....and if you are cutting thicker than recommended.....it can draw as much as 98 Amps!

The operators manual suggests that you should provide a dedicated 100 Amp fused (or circuit breaker) circuit if you are operating on single phase power of between 208 and 240 volts....and plan to use the system throughout its full thickness range. I run mine on a 50 amp 240 volt circuit....and while most of my cutting has been at 65 amps or less....I have done some 85 amp cutting on up to 3/4" without tripping the breaker.

Best regards, Jim Colt
