Broken lines when opening DFX files

Post by Fastyankee »

This is one of the free files from this site. It looks good but when you start looking at it, it will require Node editing to be right see pictures.
Is there a way around this? Its seems I get this a lot when opening DFX files.

I was going to each intersection and joining each intersection individually this is much faster. Thank you .

It wont join the nodes if I select the whole Object like you did?
I have to go to each intersection to join nodes. Drawings that do this are useless in my book. Its almost faster just redraw it.
Thanks

Redrawing would be an option. Also, there are other programs where this can all be done with one keystroke. Design is one example. CorelDraw may be another. It is unfortunate that the OP did not link/join the file before he posted it.

To The OP.
Where did you get this file. If from Etsy they have SVGs for a lot of stuff. I have had pretty good luck. Some were also broken even in SVG format as well.

TJ - I'm pretty sure he got it here. Most of are pretty easy to edit. I believe the OP is just starting out learning Inkscape, so there is a definite "learning curve" as with any program.

Here is another option. Do a Google image search, save image and import to Inkscape for auto trace, save as dxf for cutting.

No, you can't just select all and join nodes using Inkscape. No, you don't need to go to each intersection to join nodes. Study my screen shots. With the stars - for example - I selected the whole star, combined, and then joined nodes. Do this for each object. For the stars, if you wanted, you could just do one of the stars and then copy/paste/rotate to the other positions and then delete the original unjoined paths. The hardest part is the text. It would probably be quicker and easier to simply recreate the text using the text tool and then delete the existing unjoined text and put your new text in its place. There are many ways to recreate this file short of all of the node editing. If you are just starting out with Inkscape, you really do need to learn some of the techniques for node editing. Even if you are simply buying files to cut, at some point (this particular file is a good example) you will need to know how to edit nodes, etc.

LightBurn is an inexpensive program that will link/join this file with a single command. You can try LightBurn out free for 30 days, and then if you decide to purchase the cost is only $60 for a perpetual license.

I don't know who OP My guise that means Original poster which is me. The file I actually got here from the file share and I'm just using it as an example. I know SVG works best in Inscape but un fortunately a lot of files are in DXF and a lot of my files are DXF. I'm coming from Enroute 6 which is no longer supported and the new version is a monthly subscription that is very expensive. So I'm trying to move over to Inkscape or find a replacement program.
David thank you for taking the time to answerer my questions its very appreciated and you make beautiful tooling for the Pullmax. I'm going to look into Light burn that seems pretty reasonably priced.
Thanks

Hi AJ - Yes "OP" refers to Original Poster. I am not familiar with Enroute - I may have tried it as a free trial in the past - I really don't remember. For working with vector files (dxf, svg, etc.) I normally use some combination of Design Edge, Inkscape, and CorelDraw. Sometimes LightBurn and Fusion 360. Except for the problems with unlinked dxf files, Inkscape is really pretty great to use and provides great results. Now that we know that LightBurn will link/join these dxf files and export as svg for Import to Inkscape - I think that combination (Inkscape/LightBurn) will be a good one.

Thanks for your compliments on my tooling! For some of the die profile designs, I still use AutoCAD 14 in combination with MasterCam 9 on my old Windows 2000/XP computers.

Hey Dave
I downloaded Light Burn and that is definitely the way to go thanks for all the great help. You saved me tons of time and I appreciate it.
I spoke to soon it doesn't always give me the auto join option. Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks

Did you select the drawing that you want to join open lines. if you have parts of the drawing that are not combined in the drawing you would need to select them separately. If you take the cursor and start above and to the right of the drawing and drag to cover the whole drawing it the group it. You may need to select the group button at the top of the screen.

AJ - It will only offer that option if there is something selected that needs to be joined. If it is already closed paths, then it won't offer the option. Perhaps post a sample file that you are working with that is giving you problems so we can take a look.

I'm no expert with LightBurn. I tried it on your file, and it linked all the open paths, but did not combine the holes and other cutouts with the individual parts. In Inkscape, I would do a "Path, Difference" operation. I'm not sure about LightBurn - perhaps Tom will step in here and advise. Here is your file linked/joined with Design Edge.

Dave it was really hard to get each piece separated to do a union on them in Ink scape. Normally that's how I would fix it also the scaling was way off when I imported the file in to Inscape it imported way small.
Thanks

Ok here is what I did so there were not open paths which is what I though OP wanted. David on you last image all the detected intersections are the inside path planned parts. When I brought the finished DXF file into SheetCam I "selected on offset" for ease of display, and there are no open paths.
The Lightburn images show first imported DXF file and "auto join" shows bold or can be selected. And where to place the cursor to start the selection of the covered area (top right start point). After I selected the complete drawing I when "group selection" Icon and clicked on it. The you can see the "Auto join" is now grayed out (cannot select) as it now has all closed paths. I exported it in DXF format and then when to SheetCam and planned a no offset operation to show no open paths. Or did I misinterpret what is being asked for. :Sad
