Union text to monogram

Hello,
New to Inkscape, I have watched numerous video's on how to union text to monograms. I am using the latest version of Inkscape. I can get it to union but it distorts the drawing

. these are files that I purchased and if I manually join the text letter by letter it cuts fine. Can anyone please tell me what I'm missing or doing wrong? Thanks

I don't know where you got the monograms from but they are garbage, they are a bunch of unconnected arcs and lines.
The first on the stroke is way to thick.

I was beginning to think it was the files, so are all the unconnected lines joining when I union and causing it to deform like that?

I am not sure I have said many times that not all software program play nice with each other. This same thing has popped up before
This seems to be how the person drew the item, if they don't connect the drawing parts and save it like that and then it is opened in another program it is not sure how to assemble it. SVG should be a better format, You can see it more with DXF as there are different formats even though it is to be a standard under the DXF name. I have a set of SVG monograms I Bought from "etsy" called SVG regal monograms this is real nice. look here
