Help with Union or Weld

Post by Jfile »

Just when I thought I was getting the hang of InkScape, I hit a snag. Please see the attached SVG file. I have tried everything and I can't get the letters in EST and the numbers 2002 to weld to the line they are sitting on. When I did the full last name (HARRISION), I used the "difference" command and it worked like a charm. I've tried that as well as union and can't get EST and the date to weld.

If someone could take a look at it and tell me what I'm doing wrong, it would be greatly appreciated.

You cannot use the union inside of another path, you will need to use the node tools to break the path and attach another to it sa shown in the images attached here. I did 2 letters and returned you SVG file, you can do the rest. When moving a path around to align one line on top of another use the alt key and the right/left, and up/down arrow keys to move slightly. You will need to go under the view menu and click on display then outline to see these on your screen.

Ok, that makes sense now. Thank you very much. I've manually connected a few images using the process that you described so I think I'll be ok. It will just take a little longer than the Union command that I thought I could use. But, that's ok too. Practice makes perfect. ;)

Thanks again for bringing me up to speed.

Thanks for the tip. Too bad you can't "use a union inside of path." This seems to be a laborious solution to the problem. Do other software programs (that you have to buy) have a an automated way to create unions? Anyway, thank you for giving us a way to do "unions" with Inkscape! Carr

With the number of members here maybe someone that uses a different software package can answer that. You could post a question on the inkscape web page, my way is a work around as I am not a trained user of Inkscape. When questions come up I learn new things when trying to answer them, or just Google to see if someone has an answer, there are so many videos out there too.

Here is how I would do this fix
1. Change view to outline
2. Zoom drawing to see as much as possible especially in the area you want to fix
3. Select the total image
4. Go to object Object ungroup press twice until it says 15 objects at bottom.
5. Click area off the image until boxes disappear
6. Now click the area by the T it will be boxed
7. Click path break apart the T will now be boxed also
8. click off the image boxes disappear
9. Select the T again lower it until it intersects the line you want to put it on. If it tries to jump to a node disable snapping so you can put it where you want.
10. With the T selected hold shift key down and click on line you want to put it on both areas will now be boxed
11. Click path Path difference the T is fixed
12.Now click all of 2002 lower it until all the numbers intersect the line.
13 Object object ungroup. Each number is now boxed.
14.Hold shift key down and select one number and click the line you are putting it on
15.Path difference
16 Repeat for remaining numbers
17 In the center of the drawing there is a small circle click on it and press delete.
18 Zoom back out until you can see the whole drawing remember it is still all in pieces so to speak because we un grouped it all.
19 Now click on the tiny mounting hole and Object to path
20 Click on the Harrison name it will box click the centers of the A R's and O
21 Path Combine
22 Click the outside and holding the shift key down select every open area they will box as you do this don't forget the small circle mounting hole it will say 7 objects at the bottom
21 Path combine.
22. Save the image in outline mode as there is a fill error that occurred in the early portion of this drawing.
Good to Go
Long winded LOL

Sorry for the late reply. Been out of the game for a couple of weeks with another project. Thanks much for taking the time to walk me through this. Hopefully it will help someone else as well. Seems the Path Difference was the key to allot of my issues. I was stuck on trying to use only the Union command.

Thanks again!!
