Blue Patina on Steel

im sure by now everyone has seen the American flags with the awesome Patinas and paints. My wife has tasked me to create a butterfly with the blue patina as the finish. I've been searching high and low and it seems like Google reccomends steel fx and sculpt nouveau as the two patina providers. Neither one seems to really offer up what I'm trying to achieve. I've also tried alcohol inks but those done provide the depth I'm looking for. Is there anyone company that people use to achieve this look? Thanks.

Side note: I don't do flags and I certainly don't want to disrespect others people's work by copying styles. I'd just love to try and keep the old lady happy(er).

No patina or alcohol will produce depth. The depth come from a good heavy clear coat. The ones that really stand out have several layers of clear. I use a high solids automotive clear and some times use up to 3 coats my pieces. I use Steel FX patinas and I'm very satisfied with them

I use Bill's Cobalt blue. Here's a sample of how it looks with 1 coat of rattle can clear. With the high solids auto clear it looks much better. The more coats the deeper the color will look. If you want to lighten or darken any of bills colors you can mix them to get the desired tint you're looking for. Wish I had a picture of the blue with auto clear but just haven't made one. Maybe next project. I now make pictures of all my pieces for a book to set out at events and in my booths at antique and artisan malls

It is a metal dye, not patina.

Some of my customers are using BLUE HALO™, or FLAME F/X™ Patinas, as well as the COBALT BLUE Solvent Dye. TORCH F/X™ Patina Over COPPER F/X™, also produces a vivid blue, that is somewhat lighter in intensity than FLAME F/X™. The absolute simplest way to decide which Blue you want is to practice on scrap, with a few or all of the Bluing Patinas and Dyes.

I agree, the Ford emblem looks very nice.

footnote: You can make your own Kandies by using approved dyes (not mine)...to a 2K clear. (Each 2K clear mfg. will have their own line of dyes, btw).
Final results look just like the transparent/translucent Kandies, but less cost.
