6'' Velox z axis side plates

Post by SeanP »

I made these up as I was noticing a bit of flex in the back plate of the z axis, adding these cured that all together.

You might notice I have fitted a extra linear bearing on the lower part, I was just starting to feel a little play in the original so squeezed another bearing on either side, it's been like that for 12 months now, just oil and clean fairly often.
It was just a cheapo chinese bearing I had, don't think it's any different quality to what velux supplied.

Digging up an old post...
Does anyone have any more info on the plastic bearings used in the Velox Z axis slides?
Mine are finally worn out and wobbly, and the Velox website says they are permanently closed down.
Before I take it apart to start measuring I wanted to get an idea of how readily available they are so I can plan for it.

I see plenty of those listed on eBay, I fit some cheap Chinese ones a while back and still fine, keep plenty oil on those.
It's the lead screw I'm hunting for at the moment and that delrin nut, I must get something soon it's badly worn in the middle ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ™ˆ

Sean I made many of those Delrin nuts for the tables I build, very easy I used an Acme threaded rod for the lead screw. I can give you the info if you want.

Thanks that's very good of you Tom, but I'd be struggling to get them made up I'd say, I don't want to deviate too far from what's fitted now really, but it ain't easy sourcing the same nut, it's the anti backlash one with a spring, I'll do some more searching.

You may look into the 3-D printer world I have seen anti backlash nuts for sale they are for a 8 mm lead screw. Not sure what size you need.

Tom - you show an excellent alternative to purchasing "store-bought" parts.

SeanP - I would just measure up the ones you have now and find matching replacements. If you would care to share the specs/dimensions for your lead screw and nut - I will be more than happy to help you find suitable replacements.

Managed to squeeze in a couple of hours to get the info today, prepare to be shocked when you look at the leadscrew condition I know I was!
It's even more urgent than I thought, I'm going to try again now to find the same part, it would be great if you do see a replacement.

Yes min is a 12mm tread, I do keep seeing a lot of the smaller screws and nuts for 3d printers, better get looking again, it's only just holding on to the last threads, you wouldn't believe how much cutting it's done! :Wow

Man you have been working the table to hard, It need a few days off in the South France.
You may need to rework the entire Z drive assembly
Here is something that may help they sell different lengths of lead screws and ship to EU and BR

Yes looking like I won't find the same nut, spent last 2hrs searching the world ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
I'd probably get away with a circular one with a bit of modifying, be lucky to get the same longevity from another one though, wonder how brass would fair?

Buy a few spares and use a dry lube, when your down any fix will do to buy you some time.

Just a update on the leadscrew,
I eventually found near enough the right screw, went for a 12x6 - 2 start and got a pal to turn the ends.

Just by chance I found a discussion about making a delrin nut, so thought I'd give it a try, ordered a length from alliexpress and it worked a treat.
I don't have a lathe so mounted it up in the pillar drill, rigged up a rest and did some old fashioned wood turning with a chisel, head cocked over at 90deg mind!
Been cutting away now for a few weeks, runs better than ever.

https://www.denfordata.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=3727

I had the 2 halves packed up to the centre of the vise jaws, heated the screw till it was about straw colour with propane, squeezed it up, then I cooled it in water.
It didn't take much working to get a very nice fit, welded together no problem, I did grind a small flat on the screw like it shows in that post.

So I have enough material to make another 10!
