Am I out of the ball park . . .

Post by CNCCAJUN »

Looking for pricing guidance . . .

Example attached was done for a friend, but thought I would use it for an example since it is close to the type of work I want to do.

The helicopter is basically 18" X 12" on 16 gauge steel. Painted with rattle can Rustoleum.

201" total cut . . . . 30 pierces . . . 1/2 hour design time @ $25.00 per hour . .(if I knew what I were doing that would be right)

I'm thinking this should sell for $30.00 to $35 as a stock item & probably around $45 to $55 if it was a request and the file was rather easy to create.

Now based on the price sheet from this site I am a little low! I should be at $48.98 . . .and this does not cover painting . . .

Please let me know what you guys would sell this for in either scenario . . . .

Thanks in advance,
Steve

I've been using Jim's formula and it seems to put me in the right area to make out.
Material cost x2, then cut inches x material(with markup, the first formula) add that to material square inches price

12" x12" @ .05/sq"= 7.20 (material price)
201" x .05= 10.05 (cutting price)
7.20+10.05=17.25 sell price raw.
I would charge extra for coating.
I would add extra time/cost for design if it was something you spent time on.

Now that's a price that seems inline with what we can get in my vicinity. If you can charge more, that's awesome.

In my area I have adjusted the formula and based on what I have I come up with $35 powder coated in 16ga. That is 19x13 220 cut inches and 30 pierces no design time. FYI

I would be $16 for the design cut and raw. Add $20 for me to paint it, $25 for powder coat. I don't do my own powder coating but my cost on powder coat would be $15 or a little less. I prefer the powder coating and actually don't paint unless it's a big sign (4 or 5 feet or bigger) as I can get it powder coated easier and make money on that vs shutting down to paint which is a pita. Painting is just too time consuming for me to justify it at this time.

Not so lucky on powder coat prices in this area . . .

That Helicopter was quoted at $55.00 to $60.00 . . . :o :o :o

Yep, I would love to find one of these "cheap" powder coaters . . .

This is why I am building a paint booth this week . . .

Steve,

The general rule of thumb for powder coating is $5.00/sq'. And that's one side - don't forget the back side.
I don't use $10.00 because there may be a difference between front and back. The customer has all this explained before I take the piece. If there is a front and back, such as writing that will logically be a 'front' I may charge less and not worry so much about the side that won't be seen. Not that I don't try to make each as perfect as I can, but if there is a run, fisheye or small blemish, I don't strip and recoat.

A clear coat is only 50% more because there isn't as much prep as the base coat needs.

Another consideration is the time it takes to change colors. That's where the delivery time gets stretched out. We like to shoot a lot of stuff with the same color at one time. Usually, I have some pieces meant for the display table that I can use to fill the oven. If the customers' piece the only thing to be coated, I have an oven minimum of $25.00.

And remember, the cost of powder is not determined by the size of the piece but the powder going out of the gun. Coating a bolt uses as much powder as a 6x6" item.

Be careful choosing a coater that is 'too' cheap. If (s)he doesn't ask if the piece will be indoors or out, the first red flag goes up. Some powders are more sensitive to UV and should be coated with a 'super durable' or UV resistant powder if the piece will be in sunlight. Also, they should be asking about a phos treatment depending on the area you're in. La. has more salt in the air so you should be more worried about that than I am in the high plains.
PC ain't cheap. I drench my stuff with denatured alcohol looking for breaks in the runoff. That stuff is $15.00/gallon!

I would sell for about $40 with rattle can paint. We should be close on prices since our economy is close between Texas and Louisiana.
