Thanks David lots of great info for those thinking about a 3-D printer. One being the differences in filament brands and materials strengths and temperatures. One aspect of the temperature is each layer need to melt together as they are laid down stacking to form the project. Even the ambient room temperature can have an effect on this. Fine tuning is done with the slicer's post processor where changes can be made and named for what change you have made.
This container is 3.125" in diameter and 2.375" tall with a screw lid printed a separate parts that fit together correctly (wonders of CNC)

Tom - that is a great looking part. Quite a difference between that one and the sample part you printed for Allan. Perhaps you could post your slicer parameters for the sample part you printed for Allan so he can check against his own settings.

Thanks also for the great info. Sorry I've been away from the shop all day. I'll try to send .stl for the black part soon. Also want to try and print one without the little dowel pins. Looks like they are causing the same problems on Tom's printer as on mine.

I ran across this video comparing .stl and .step and thought about this post.
I know nothing about 3d printing, one day I'll take the plunge.

Thanks rokcrler, I have not heard f step files for 3-D printing, I did convert one of my STL files to step but my slicer will not import it.
I downloaded Prusa slicer and it could not load the step file either :Sad

OThill you may try changing the extruder temp to the highest degree shown on the filament spool, it should show on the sticker in a range of temps.

Tom - I just checked out the Bambu Studio slicer, and it apparently does have the ability to slice STEP files and provide output g-code compatible with some of the Anycubic printers. Unfortunately it does not offer the option to slice files for the FlashForge printers, which is the brand I have.

I tried printing the same part at both medium refinement and high refinement levels for the STL files as saved from Fusion 360. I really can't tell any difference in print quality. I don't know exactly what level of refinement (resolution) the Bambu Studio slicer uses when converting imported STEP files to STL mesh format for slicing. The Bambu Studio slicer does look very interesting - it's just too bad that I can't use it with my FlashForge printers.

Printed a circle without dowels.
20240124_141004.jpg
Came out perfect. Gonna call that good for now and work with learning more about printers and drawing etc. I'll work with the streaked prints when I run into it again. Tom I checked into printing at highest temp rating for filament on my roll and found I had already been printing 10 deg. Higher than recommended which was the default setting on my anycubic slicer. Shows how illiterate I am with my new hobby. The disc without dowels was printed at the recommended temp of 210 deg.

that temp sticker is on the filament so each time you should check it, as it changes with manufactures.
I found with the new roll of PETG I did not hat it hot enough and the poor old extruder was having a problem pushing the filament out as it was to cool. :Sad Very crappy prints until I changed the temp.
Have fun are the grand kids getting into it too.

Yes the grandsons are getting into it some. They are both still in school and they live about 6 miles away so a little difficult to get together on it. The 14 year old is also into the plasma cutting a lot and his mom is doing the sales end so we're busy enough. The young ones catch on like a house on fire! This old one is slow as the itch.

I installed the Bambu Studio slicer and tried a file that I converted from STL to STEP with an free online converter. First the conversion was very slow (should have known it did not work) and it did not make it through Bambu. :Sad Bambu did load a STL from my disc OK. Since I don't have a program to generate STEP files I uninstalled Bambu.

Tom - here is the step file I was experimenting with doing some trial prints.

I converted from stl to step using Fusion 360 and opened it with the Bambu Studio slicer.

I showed my results in my previous post. Perhaps you can try using the Bambu slicer to print this one and show us your result. I would like to print it myself using the Bambu slicer, but my FlashForge printers are not compatible with the Bambu slicer.

Tom - I converted Allan's original file to step format. Here is the download link.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/16dmR7I ... sp=sharing

This one will open with the Bambu slicer, but will need scaling to reduce the size. I will be interested to see if you can print this one with a better result than your previous print.

I have tried to work with Bambu, I set it up for my Anycubic Vyper but each time I import your file it automatically reverts to its own printer and the part is way to large. :Sad See screen shots

Tom - as I said in my previous post - this one (Allan's part) will need scaling to size. This is because once I import his STL file to Fusion 360, convert to mesh, scale and then export as STEP the scaling if not correct. So when I open it with Bambu studio, I knew I would need to scale it to the correct size.

Tom - here is the STEP file for Allan's STL scaled to the correct size.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZhpEsf ... sp=sharing

When I open it with the Bambu slicer here is how it looks.
scale 5.jpg
The main thing here is that hopefully you can print it to make a comparison to your original print of his STL file to see if the print quality has improved any so we will know it this "STL to STEP" trick will produce the desired result.

Also here is the test part I printed previously which exhibited the same "streaking" problems as Allan's part did on my smaller printer.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fAYrMm ... sp=sharing

This is a STEP file which should open fine with your Bambu slicer. I would be interested to see if you can print this one so we can see what sort of improvement (if any) is achieved over the standard STL print.

Ok I when through the setup and connecting to my raspberry PI WiFi connedtion and the bambu is all setup and connected. All info for my printer in Bambu and when I click on print in Bambu nothing happens. the only thing I can load into the printer is after I created a 3FM file and then created a G-code with my slicer to load into the PI for printing. After all this I do not feel the print is actually from the Bambu directly. So I don't think it is a STEP print. :Mad :Mad :Mad :Mad
