In my opinion Corel x5 should be the ver. to have. With x5 the loose ends can all be connected at once saving you one hellava lot of time and aggravation.

Re: dropping the insides help
The problem you are having is that the objects (letters you created) are not completely closed all the way. This causes the fill to get all screwed up. The places that they are open is where the fill starts to get messed up.
To close the object, they must all be on the same layer. Each time you draw an item, it puts it on it's own layer - or makes it separate from all the other drawn objects. This allows you to move that item around without moving everything else you drew. In order to join those items together and close the object, you need to "combine" them as one object.
Your drawing has been grouped as one drawing with multiple objects, so, to fix your drawing you must first "Break" it apart. To do this, select the drawing and then go to Arrange -> Break Apart. Now you can select one of the parts of the G and move it away to see why it isn't filling properly. Hit UNDO to put the part back, then you will need to select all the pieces of the letter "G" and "COMBINE" them together so they will be as one piece. Once combined, you can now use the SHAPE tool to join all the broken nodes together to form a closed object, which will then be filled. Once that is done you will need to do the same with the "A" and so on.
If you need more help with some of the above, let me know.

Re: dropping the insides help
I take it X4 does not have the join nodes tool.

Re: dropping the insides help
I don't believe it does. You have to manually join each connection.

I think the "Join Nodes" came out in X5.
