Powermax Shield Cap Condition

We are all familiar with replacing electrodes and nozzles on a regular basis and I have found that many operators overlook the other consumable items in the torch such as the shield cap.

The shield is subjected to a lot of abuse and the orifices in the shield can become plugged with slag. Be sure to inspect your shield by holding it up to the light and confirming the orifices are clear each time you replace your nozzle and/or electrode and replace it if you see any problems. Your torch is very complex and everything must remain in good condition or you will see cut quality degrade just as it would if any of the other consumable items were overused. Keep your shield fresh and be another step closer to consistent quality cuts.

This is true . . . I used to get a lot ohmic errors until I started inspecting the bottom of the shield.

I have come to find out when cutting hot rolled you can accumulate an 1/16" thick ring of crude rather quickly.

So now your ohmic sensing is now worthless . . . you will get an error . .

Solution - I remove my cap, inspect, clean as needed . . . What works for me a deck of cards size sanding sponge.

One light quick pass removes crude and restore your conductivity . . .now ohmic works . . .

I find a set of welding nozzle cleaning wires invaluable for maintaining the nozzle, i'm still getting good results from the original shield after 12 months now, had a couple of proper blockages and managed to free those.

just cleaned mine yesterday on my PM45. I wasn't getting good cuts and sure enough it was the consumables.

I keep some dental picks handy for cleaning the shield.

Dental picks come in handy for a lot of things. Next time you drop by your welding supply store ask them about a set of tip DRILLS. The drills come with a handy collet style holder. They will save consumables that even tip cleaners won't.
