28?? ga Titanium Specs using PM45

Post by weldor2005 »

Okay all,

I got a co-worker at my day job who has a piece of 28 ga titanium sheet that was originally used as the skin of a old Mac laptop that he would like me to cut more or less just rectangles that he will later use for a front and back cover of a paper booklet that he wants to make for his son (This laptop part is his sons original mac). Luckily there is some "extra" material that I can hope to try and zero in the machine on, but I would ask if there is anyone here that may have some first hand advice on it. I'd be comfortable going really low on amps if I need to, to get a decent cut speed that doesn't have stupid amounts of machine lash. Using the Pcam and a hypertherm PM 45.

Thanks for your help!

If you have a set of the 30 amp consumables (cut chart is in your manual for T30 consumables) you can follow the steel cutting specs....but increase (yes, faster) the speed by 20 to 25%. Same height, run at 30 amps and you will get a decent cut....speed will be very high...so intricate detail may be an issue.

You can also use the standard 45 amp shielded consumables.....again follow the specs for cutting with these parts in your operators manual for steel....run at 30 amps and go faster than for steel.

The T30 consumables will do a better job.

Jim,

I didn't think that the 45 T hand torch could use a 30A consumable? Just that you used the 45A consumables at 30A?

And here I thought it would have been closer to aluminum specs than steel, but I trust your say over the zero experience I got on it.

Here are the T30 consumables and the cut chart.....copied from the Powermax45 operators manual. They are the same consumables as used in the Powermax30.

Yes, I just thought you were trying to say that I can use the T30V consumables in a T45V torch body?

You can use the T30V consumables in your PM45 torch. He is showing you the parts needed and the chart is from the PM45 manual.
I have never tried them but I don't cut that much light gauge material.

I don't know what kind of machine you have or if it will corner at 360ipm but here is what a customer used

Speed 360ipm
Powermax 45 with Powermax 30 consumables and at 24amps
Air pressure 65-66psi
Ramping/Acceleration 58
Constant velocity control settings unknown

What you will find on titanium is if you run it too slow it will have an extremely hard slag/dross on the back which will require grinding to remove.

Thank You, I have the PM45 and could get my hand on the consumables, and using the plasmacam. The parts to be cut are just rectangles, and if the material I was given has the room I was planning on just cutting it out in straight lines and no cornering needed. 360 IPM is in the ball park of what Mister Colt gave me. 350+20%, so I got some great starting points gents, and just need to get to it, there is no rush on this job as he told me it was intended to be a gift for his son Christmas of 2013.

When you get it figured out post your specs and pics, never know when one of us might be in the same situation.
