This is my first request for a large overhead ranch sign.
Looks like about 8'x14" with the possibility of a slight arch to it. It will be chain-hung, free-swing.
What is the recommended thickness of steel for pieces like this?
Thanks,
Dano

I wouldn't go any less than an 1/8".

Thanks guys,
10ga it shall be. The price jump for the 3/16 is shocking up here.

Re: Ranch Signs - What weight?
I have been making this type signs for about a year now. I use 10 ga for the text/design and
make a frame from 1" or 2" sqaure tube depending on the span. It maybe overkill but the
customers love them. Here is a photo of one I finished yesterday.

Thanks Peepers.
Do you attach the frame around the perimiter or on the back side (hidden). I assume it's welded.
What price do you put on a piece like that, and what kind of finish do you give it?

Re: Ranch Signs - What weight?
I centered the text on the 2 inch frame and spot weleded it about every 6 inches.
It is painted satin black. I charged $600.00. It maybe on the low side, not really sure,
but I am happy with the profit margin.

Re: Ranch Signs - What weight?
I too use 10 ga or 3/16th with 1" Sq tube frame. Lots of times I have use three sheets, with a different design - front and back, with a sheet of stainless, or something else sandwiched between. For that in 8' x 2' I have to get at least two to three thousand $. Of course, more for custom, exclusive drawings, etc., but I am blessed to be in a "high End market". For a single sheet with frame I'd want a grand, more for custom, one of a kind drawing. I've made dozens of the three sheet pieces and believe me THAY ARE HEAVY AND TOUGH to handle - so ask enough $. If customers want really nice, unique signs they'll pay for them. If they want something cookie cut send them to your competitor... Let him go broke! This is no time to give your stuff away!
But, Keep in mind it is all about CONTRAST! Signs cut clear through, or any sign for that matter, depend heavly upon the background for contrast. In other words if it'll be viewed with nothing but sky in the background you are fine. If there are trees, etc behind it you'll need to come up with some kind of contrast so it can be seen. I seen so many nice silhouette signs that are terrific, EXCEPT so dissapointing - because no contrast and ya can't see them! I've taken a bunch of photos of TERRIBLE, low contrast signs to show customers what they have to avoid.
Good luck,
Bob
