wiring a 65 with hand torch
I am in the middle of a job and my plasma went out, so I borrowed a 65 from a friend and can't figure out how to wire it so mach 3 will fire the torch. From what I have read you can order a port for the back of the plasma cutter and wire the machine torch in to it, but if I can avoid spending money on something that isn't mine I would like to do so plus the one I'm borrowing has the had torch anyway.

While it is fairly simple to splice into the torch trigger switch wiring.....as a Hypertherm employee I cannot offer advice as this effectively bypasses the torch safet circuitry. You can look in the operators manual at the electrical diagram and see the wiring that goes to the torch trigger switch....from there it is relativel easy to interface.
With the machine torch you make the connections right at the interface plug (optional) on the rear panel..

I understand why you can't instruct me on how to do it, but can you tell me if the purple and orange wires are the trigger wires? Either way I appreciate your reply Mr. Colt

Re: wiring a 65 with hand torch
I would have to open up the Powermax operators manual to the wiring diagram near the back....the torch trigger wiring is all laid out there. I have never wired up a hand torch (well not in recent years) for machine cutting, and if I did I still could not pass that info on to you.
Here's the story: A bunch of years ago a shop had a Hypertherm with a hand torch that was used for hand cutting. They also had a machine torch for the same power supply....which remained attached to a track burning machine.....which had a remote pendant with a push button for firing the machine torch. Back then....the remote pendant would fire whatever torch happened to be plugged into the plasma. One morning the operator came in to use the machine torch and do a striaght line cut on a plate with the track burner. He got it all lined up.....grabbed the remote pendant. Little did he know that the guy on the previous shift had used the hand torch and left it plugged into the power supply....at the end of his shift he neatly coiled up the hand torch on the acetylene tank on the set of oxyfuel torches...right next to the plasma. So....when the operator pushed the button on the pendant expecting the machine torch to fire.....the hand torch fired, pierce the acetylene cylinder and the entire shop was destroyed by aftermath. It was Hypertherm's fault (so the judge said) and replacing the building was rather costly, fortunately no one was hurt seriously. Machine torches can be remotely started from the rear panel interface plug (CPC), hand torches are interlocked so they only fire from the torch trigger switch. If you choose to use a hand torch from a remote firing source (cnc machine, remote switch pendant, etc.) you have to figure out how to modify the wiring on your own, many do! Wish I could offer an easier solution.

Oh well, thanks anyway
