too much dross
This was cut with a hypertherm HPR260xd high definition table. Material is 12 gauge cut at 50 amp settings new consumables. The plasma table is less than 1 year old and we constantly get cuts that look like this. Any ideas on what the problem could be? The machine "misfires" constantly and the quality is no better than the 20 year old unit that we replaced with this one.

What are your other settings, Cut height? Cut speed?

All of that is automated. Everything is factory settings.

Re: too much dross
You definitely have a problem and I am sure Jim Colt will jump in here to help. Something somewhere is whacked on a top notch system.

Re: too much dross
The dross certainly indicates that there is an issue with height or speed. Provide me some more details regarding the cutting machine....make and model as well as the cnc controller type, the torch height control type. Pictures of the machine will help as well.
The 50 amp consumables use oxygen plasma and oxygen shield gas.....that is what you are doing, correct?

Go for set-up 130 amp with air-oxygene, magic will happen.

Re: too much dross
Messer has a great tech service department.....I suggest contacting them with the pictures with dross shown above and work with them to resolve the issue. You can go with a higher power level....such as the 80 amp process, however the 50 amp process will provide squarer edges and tighter overall tolerances. I suspect you will need a little tweaking of cut height as well as cut speeds.

Re: too much dross
I had a lil boo boo happen yesterday that caused all my stuff to cut like that. and was leaving dross over every thing and it was even pooling and runing like lava off the plate and filling in my cuts. I had my work lead clamp on a lil wrong and it got hit by my z axis and poped off the plate. and my cutting got instantly bad. Opps I caught it as quick as it happened. and its not the first time its ever tried to cut with the lead not on and It even looked like what it looks like trying to cut with out the work clamp on. But were it got weird and some thing I never had happen yet. was even when I reconnected the clamp real good. It was still cutting like total freaking crap. I seen better cuts from a cutting torch in the hands of a novis and all there gas settings wrong. I keep messing with the clamp thinking it just was not making good contact. My amps my tips volts my speed nothing helped to make it sart cutting like it was just a few seconds before the work lead clamp popping off. .
So I pulled the tip out and seen the electrode. It was burned back about 1/8 inch with a big jagged cavity in the center of it. and my tip was pitted around the hole on the inside. I Changed the tip and electrode and all was good again.
