Do you make stuff for junk shops?

Post by wickedinhere »

I keep getting calls from people that have these small stores that sell junk(china products) wanting me to make random small pieces. The conversation always ends with " i need it as cheap as possible so i can make a good profit". What about my profit? I am about to the point where i am not going to even return these kinda of calls anymore. They want a design 3x3 inches with a hook to hang stuff on and they need me to be at 3-5 dollars and that has to include a patina finish. I said "WOW" these people are crazy.

All you can really do is give them your price, there's no reason to bend over and try and compete with over seas prices, you cant do it. I was installing a security system for a client and seen some of the metal art they got that came on the slow boat, it was never cleaned up, all the dross was still attached and the patina was just a quick spray paint job plus it was made from about 28ga tin.. I guess if you didnt know any better it looked like a old beat up sign...

Update, the lady got a guy to cut her some stuff and it looks bad lets just say you get what you pay for. The stuff this guy cut would be scrap for most people.

I refuse to sell any of my art in a junk store!
I'd rather starve than put my quality art on a rack next to china crap

And I never dicker on prices either.
