CorelDrawX4 FREEZES

Post by JJsCustomDesigns »

(Program Not Responding)

Since i installed it on my new computer it constantly freezes (HP laptop, running windows 7). Especially when im doing work with text. My shop computer does the same thing. Im running Windows XP with upgraded memory and ram there.

I disabled Live Text. no change. Im bout to pull my hair out over this. Ive googled and read so many different post about this same problem. But none of them have solutions. Always ends ina dead thread.

Ive even looked thru the CorelDraw Forums...
I dont run any programs while im working in Corel. Just Corel
Anyone have any solutions?

not very good luck to have the same prob on 2 computers with different OS

update video, audio and network drivers, and maybe reseat memory chips and external cards

in corel, under tools/options/global, uncheck enable-carm

in windows explorer, right click on 'computer', hit properties/advanced-system-settings/advanced-tab/performance-section/settings, check to optimize for performance (avoid aero or transparent theming in win 7)

in that same dialog under the advanced tab, set pagefile size to zero, reboot, then reset it to automatic, reboot again, clears pagefile

be sure you have more than enough free disc space (10 gigs min)

delete everything in the windows/prefetch folder

do disk cleanup, run chkdsk /r, and defrag

if none of that helps, retail computers are always loaded with bloatware, never hurts to get hold of an actual windows disc and install windows without all that, you usually just need to have the right network driver on a cd or usb drive in order to get online to get all other updates and drivers

I recently had similar problems twice, once it was a case fan unplugged, and the other was a video card not seating quite right,

if it seems to happen in conjunction with clicking or moving the mouse, it's probably the video card/driver, but it can also be the audio and or network cards/drivers

if networking between 7 and XP that can be painful

So far so good on the laptop. Have yet to try it on the shop computer.

I noticed the times that it freezes is when im trying to resize the text or when im fitting text to a path.

Thank you for your help Gary.

I am still getting "Not Responding" freeze ups from CorelDrawX4. Ive went thru and deleted un-needed files. Ran scans and defrag the computer. It doesnt seem to matter if im working with text or a graphic anymore. If it decides to go into "Not Responding" mode, it does it without warning.

My pc free space is at around 75%. Quad Core HP, Windows 7.

Anyone have any ideas?
Im starting to think it was a bad file i downloaded somewhere.

Also-- Whats the F8 do exactly when loading corel?
other things to try are the proverbial F8 start of CDR (hold F8 when
launching from before selecting CDR until it asks if you want to set to
factory defaults, (reply yes, obviously!)),
Quoted from Corel Forums.

This wont delete any CorelDraw files i have on the machine will it? I dont wanna have to start all over drawing and downloading the files agin.

That won't delete any files you have done. All it does is reset the Corel layout, tabs, etc... back to the factory settings. All of your files will stay right where they are.

As for as crashes.........well....welcome to Corel. I have upgraded to X5 and it has fixed some of the bugs, but like every other upgrade it has also added in some more. Because of this I have been slowly moving over to Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Corel does have bugs and crashes, the problem is that they don't seem to care about fixing them or offering any patches - just the next upgrade that you have to purchase. You may want to check to see if there are any patches or updates. Corel says it automatically updates itself...but it doesn't. Go to your HELP pulldown menu and look for UPDATES. Click it and see if there are any out there that they didn't notify you about.

What you may want to start doing is to save your file anytime you need to do any text to path work, open a new file and do what you need to do and if it doesn't crash, then you can save it - then copy it into your original drawing. At least this way you don't lose or screw up your original drawing when it crashes.

I have been using Corel since ver. 3 back in the mid 90's. It's a shame that their support has fallen off so badly that I am now ready to jump ship into something else.

i downloaded a patch that was in the Help window. But it still freezes when i try and resize text. I drew a 1993 mustang the other night. No problems at all. As soon i start playing with text, goes to Not Responding. Ive seen a ton of post for X5 doing this in the corel forums. I tried doin some of those fixes. Nothing works. Its getting frustrating. Seems everyone wants text on their project.

btw, Thanks Gamelord. I didnt know there was a Manual Update in Corel. I learn something new every day.

The one at the shop (windows 7)freezes when I'm full zoomed in making quick node adjustment.. I occasionally have the problem on the house puter (vista) as well... It really stinks if ya started a drawing and never saved it!!!!

X4 is bug crazy. Updating to X5 is almost mandatory. X5 is much more stable, if you can afford it, I would highly recommend updating to at least X5.
