Please Help - Curve Joins to Another Node

Corel Draw is kicking my butt. When I edit a curve it tries to join it to something. Any ideas

you can see that the outer path is showing 3 pairs of end nodes, if it was a single closed path, there would only be one end node showing per path. Use the shape tool, drag a window around each node pair then hit join, that should close the curve, and leave only one end node showing on the outer path when selected with the pick tool as in your picture. I have no idea why draftsight closed one of those paths with a straight line. And it appears there may be an issue with the first P, and possibly both P's and the letter A, the first P looks different in draftsight (has a node handle showing), and the A's appear to have lines crossing the gaps.
