Protecting parts after removing millscale

Post by AMF »

I have parts that need to be welded. I remove the mill scale with acid and they flash rust. How can i prevent this, BUT still be able to weld the pieces with minimal, if any prep and affecting the welding process.

I have bought manufactured parts that have the mill scale removed and haven't rusted in over 2 years. What are they curing the finished steel with?

I've also had pieces, rust along the cut plasma cut line, with mill scale still on the part.

As always ,Thank you

If you neutralize the acid by spraying on a baking soda and water mix that will eliminate the instant rust that happens the moment the steel dries but it will still rust eventually. Not sure what you could do to keep it clean longer without some coating that would increase prep time other than keep the parts in a low humidity environment.

I use iron phosphate to reduce the flash rusting after removing mill scale. Best thing to do is blow dry them with clean dry air right after soaking and rinsing. You can get iron phosphate lots of places. I use Klean Strip® Concrete & Metal Prep & Etch from Menards.
