I think I am in Trouble!

Post by Joe Jones »

I am the top bidder on TWO fiber laser tables. One is a 1,000 Watt fiber laser 4x8. The other is a 6,000 Watt 5x10. I am currently winning BOTH tables. :-o

Maybe someone will outbid me on the 1,000 Watt 4x8 table, and leave me with just one. I want the 6,000 Watt table, but fate may have other plans. My only other option is to buy BOTH of them. :Wow

Now I am outbid on both of them. I will check back tomorrow morning and make one last run at the 6000 Watt machine in Texas. If I lose that one, I will have about another 1/2 hour to make a last run at the 1000 Watt machine in Illinois.

What would YOU offer, for a brand new 6000 Watt 5x10 fiber laser table?

I also need to run up to Wisconsin to pick up TWO powder coat ovens I purchased. One 8x8, and the other is smaller.

Crazy world! BOTH lasers went for ridiculously high prices. The 6000 watt went for around $27K and the 1000 watt sold for $19K. Before I spend that kind of money on a USED machine with NO WARRANTY, I will just spend the extra cash on a new machine, or a used machine that comes WITH a warranty.

I am looking at FS laser now, out of Vegas. They have a nice used 1Kw fiber laser table with a warranty that I may buy. Setup and training is also available! First I have to run up to Wisconsin to get the powder coat ovens, and then build the extension onto the FrankenBarn, and then ... win the LOTTERY

With auctions there is always someone in the bushes waiting for the last second to put a big bid in. I don't think you are going to find equipment like that cheap, even with companies closing up shop these days. :Sad

It is possible. I bought a fully functional PlasmaCam DHC2 table in San Antonio for only $200.00. I bought three more of them, each for under $800.00.

For me, the issue is, why pay such a high price for a USED laser? It comes with no warranty, and no idea of when the laser will die.

Since I passed on these two lasers, I have been in contact with a representative of FS Lasers in Las Vegas. He has a used machine there that they want to sell. It comes with a one year warranty, and I can either pay cash for it, or finance it. They will deliver it and set it up, and even train me on its use. It is a 1000 Watt fiber laser with an open table platform. I am working to figure out how to finagle the finances. I have been spending a lot lately, and I know it will catch up with me sooner or later. :Wow

I really do want to get back into the metal art I was doing before the covid zombie apocalypse destroyed common sense  but I am not excited about moving back to my plasma table. I can use DesignEdge to draw the art files and cut them on the laser table. VERY intriguing!

Tom - this is pretty much the same with any of these "live auctions" - all the action usually takes place right at the end. BaT is a good example - the auctions typically last for 7 days, giving plenty of time for potential bidders/buyers to ask questions. I have personally been involved in a number of these on BaT and I will usually wait until the last 2 minutes to enter my opening bid. Any bid that comes in with under 2 minutes to go automatically resets the clock to 2 minutes to give everyone a fair/equal chance. So no "bid sniping". More like Barrett-Jackson.

There are usually lots of guys bidding early - mostly just for the fun of it. We refer to them as "tire kickers".
The serious bids usually come later towards the end of the auction.

Here is one of the recent auctions I participated in at BaT. If you scroll down the page, you can see all of the bidding action occurred very close to the end of the auction. I just happened to be the high bidder on this one.

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1971- ... oadster-2/

My BaT "handle" is "adbuch" - same as the one I use here at Plasmaspider.

Here is another one that I participated in last summer. There was a real "bidding war" right at the end.

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1958-velocette-venom/

Joe you may want to look at LightBurn for laser work it may be way to go directly to the laser after design.
I can use DesignEdge to draw the art files and cut them on the laser table.

The FS Laser can import DXF files directly from DesignEdge and cut them. I have Lightburn for my X-TOOL lasers and others. However, I am more adept at drawing in DesignEdge, so when I start to create the custom suspension for the coffin trailers and other things on the list, I will probably design the pieces in DesignEdge and cut them on the fiber laser table that I am this close >< to buying.

Full Spectrum 1Kw fiber laser on a 4x8 table, with delivery, assembly and training - $42,250.00

Option #1 - $18,566.00 DOWN, and finance $23,684.00. - $608 Monthly payment

Looking for other options... I may just pay cash and forget about financing.

You said a 6kw went "insanely high" at 27k but you're thinking about spending 42k on a 1kw?
The 6k looks like a brand new machine. I get the no warranty part but even the 1k was 19,000? you could buy a helluva lot of replacement parts (including a whole machine and have $$$ left over) for the $23,000 difference.

I called the manufacturer of the laser. YES, it is a new machine. But it was manufactured a year ago. They told me that if it needed any parts, I would have to pay full retail along with the import fees and any tariffs. They could not offer training or even let me download the software in English. That was on ME, because it was not a new machine. So yes, it was not worth the price.

The $42K is also for a used machine, but it comes with a warranty, and a salesman who speaks ENGLISH, and the company is based in Las Vegas. The price includes shipping, SETUP in the shop, and two days of one-on-one training. So YES, it is worth the price.

I don't mind spending money. I don't like to WASTE money.

No rhyme or reason here. I also expect quite a learning curve with a complex laser specific software package. Unless these can be run using Design Edge - it may just end up being "dead in the water" anyway. But entertaining, as always, to watch.

David, anyone can learn how to run these machines. It isn't rocket science. Since I CAN import DXF files created in DesignEdge, the only thing I need to deal with, is placement of the shapes, and the cut settings, (speed, power etc) just like a plasma table. Anyway, the price includes on-site assembly and training.

I am just waiting for the contractor to pour the pad, so I can set up the FrankenBarn extension, and then ...

The construction of the FrankenBarn extension has begun. I am adding a 25x43' extension to one side of the main building. I am combining TWO of these barn sheds into one, to give me the additional length, and I am raising the roof four feet.

The master evil plan is to get the lasers, and the 3D printers, and the other machines etc. to start producing things to sell once again. I have two young men, sons of family friends who are both old enough NOW to work. They both need jobs, so I will pay them to help me get things going.

I gave them three of the 3D printers, so they can study them, work out the "bugs," and sell them. I told them that they can set up a Shopify store or whatever, market everything, sell everything, and we can split the profits. I have a large investment into this, but it is not about making money. It is about having something to do, and to help these two "kids" get a good start. They are HARD workers and trustworthy, something that most 'youts cannot claim. I am paying each of them $30.00 per hour, so the "team" of them is costing me $1.00 per minute, or $500.00 per day.
