Hypertherm 45XP error code 3-10-1

Post by tinspark »

I just got the dreaded error code 3-10-1 on my Hypertherm Powermax 45xp (non-sync) today.
I couldnt hear any fan rattling or noise until I shut the compressor off and all shop noise.
The little fan was on its last leg. My shop is so noisy I cannot hear the fan or any fan noise
Pulled the fan out and ordered another one.

I did put it back together with the old fan and it does work but is hobbling along. and rattling like a honeymoon car dragging stringed cans down the road!
But I will hold off on cutting anything until the new fan comes.
We are still in the hot season here in central CA, USA and I do not want to fry a board or anything else because of a $65.00 fan....
I have worked this little plasma cutter hard over the last 6 years and have no complaints!

Same issue here with me on my PM65 and the new fan fixed it. Didn't order mine from Hypertherm, I found the exact same fan online for a fraction of the cost. Hope the new fan solves your problem. Good luck.

Just a follow up to maybe help someone in the future with a fan issue. It is possible to install the fan backwards. I forgot to verify which way it was supposed to go back in when I took the old fan out. Also whether it drew air into the front louver and out the side louver or pushes air into the unit and across the heat sync and out the front of the unit. So I copied the fan orientation as per their pdf drawing. (See pics) . This blew the air out the side louver and seemed backwards. And sucked air into the front louver, which basically created a negative pressure inside of the unit housing. I emailed hypertherm and i did indeed have it installed backwards , even though i copied the fan blade direction in the manual as a reference. I purchased the fan from linde gas and it was sold as a genuine hypertherm part, so i am assuming it isn’t spinning backwards by default. The fan is in fact supposed to blow into the unit from the side louver across the heat sync and out the front if the unit. So i had the joy of disassembling and reassembling their tricky little case this morning. Again! But no harm no foul. Just an fyi, in case someone else scratch their head after the fact, I forgot which way to stick the little rascal back in!!

Good info Doug, never even thought of that. Been a while since I replaced my fan and never checked the air flow direction. Next time my fan turns on I will check to be sure it is blowing out the front. Thanks for the tip.

My first install matched the Hypertherm fan pdf setup and was blowing backwards.
If yours iis the same as the pdf service manual, then my fan was wired backwards from factory....
Doug - I couldn't tell you that without opening up the 45xp case, which is a pain to do. So If your fan is blowing the wrong direction and reversing the wires corrects that, then that is what I would do. Otherwise turn the fan around so it is blowing in the correct direction.

By the way, I ran my 45xp last night and the air comes in the side and exhausts out the front. The last time you asked me, I didn't cut long enough to get the fan to turn on.

I was able to see the fan blade configuration through the side louver and took a picture and posted my fan blade direction after I installed the new OEM fan. But thats cool. There are 4 wires for this fan, which plugs into a board. I am not inclined to cut or swap any wires. I just installed it in the opposite direction after talking to Scott, and called it a day. I will look at our 45xp at our apprenticeship school the next time that i am there. I am just curious if my fan is different is all i am curious about even though it is now blowing in the corect direction. I did some cutting tonight on 14 gauge and the fan never came on. It is too cool here now. But it did come on the last batch that I cut, but was definitely blowing backwards
