Need HELP with Inkscape

Post by Badenglish »

I have spent so many hours trying to get this to work with no success. Just learning but have watch many tutorial videos and can not get this to work.
This is a birthday present for my brother who is a corvette fan. I cannot get the circle's and font to union. Can someone take a look and explain what I am doing wrong. Going to try and attach the file. Thanks

This will be an easy fix. I will get back here later this evening and show you exactly how to do it.

Badenglish - here are the steps I used to edit your file. In retrospect, I should have re-curved the lower "CORVETTE" text right after I resized the circles. I waited until the end which was more work than needed. Let me know if you have any specific questions about the process I used.

Note - at this point I went back and re-curved the lower text to more closely match the outer circle.
This involved selecting all and breaking apart, stenciling the lower letters, combining them, then "Path, Path Effects, Bend" to re-shape them.
Then I had to use some of the Path tools to get everything back to what I had started with. This was just to show you how to use the Bend tool.

One last thing I just thought of - the "O" and the "R" in the word CORVETTE will need to be stenciled to keep the centers from falling out when cut. This is what we normally think of as "stenciled letters". The stenciling I was referring to before was differenceing the center and outer portion of the letters "O" and "R" so that they would look right in Normal view with color fill added.

Here is how to use node editing to stencil the "O" and "R" for a drawing that is already finished. So no need to break apart to do it this way.

By the way, you would not want to use "Union" for the circles and text. Once you have differenced the two circles to create the ring, and combined the letters, then you would move the text at the top of the z stack, then select both the ring and the text and "Path, Difference". Union and Difference do two different things. Where you would use "Path, Union" is when you union the car with the ring/text - as I showed in my steps above.

Let us know how you make out with your file and if you have more questions.

I gave this some more thought and there is a quicker way to stencil the letters after completing the file. Here's the quicker method.

Rokcrler - I don't yet have your experience with Inkscape, but am learning as I go. Sometimes I forget some or this stuff, as I normally do my drawing work with Design Edge. Thanks!

Larry - I'm happy to found my replies useful. Let us know if you have any other questions or comments and we will try to answer them. And yes - by all means post your finished Inkscape file for us to check out. Also the finished cut piece. I had just assumed you were going to place the car in the center of the ring, so that's what I did.

Don't sell yourself short...I along with many others have learned new stuff in inkscape from your tutorials. What's Tom say about cats? 😂

Something about meow, but I didn't take his meaning. But yes - we are all trying to learn new stuff and it's lots of fun in the process.
