Calvery cross sabers covert to DXF

Post by mtvet06 »

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to help a buddy of mine with a sign for his new house. He as a Calvary scout in the army and is wanting the calvary cross sabers. I was wondering if anyone would happen to have a .dxf file? would mine sharing it?

I'm still trying to figure out inkscape and how to trace and turn it into a .dxf file.

I can draw that for you. What is your deadline for the file?

no huge rush on it for the moment. We are still in the discussion phase. I do know this will be part of the design since it was his in the army.

You could use Inkscape to do an auto trace and then manually edit, or manually trace it out from your image. I like to open the image with Paint.net and adjust brightness/contrast first, then import to Inkscape to see what sort of result I can achieve. I'm not sure exactly how much detail you are looking for in the swords - and that will determine whether you would be happy with an auto trace or if you would need to put in more work manually.

Here are some of the results I got from the Inkscape auto trace.
auto trace result 1.jpg
auto trace result 2.jpg
auto trace result 3.jpg
auto trace result 4.jpg
Are you looking to learn how to do this yourself (auto trace and edit, or manual trace) using Inkscape? Or do you simply what someone to do this for you?
If you want to learn how to do this with Inkscape, let us know and we can provide a more in-depth explanation. Otherwise I expect one of the other members will step up and do it for you - but not using Inkscape.

David,

I would like to learn to do it in Inkscape. I'm new to that platform. Is there a step process posted here on the form?

Hi Zach,
Yes - there is information about auto tracing and manual tracing with Inkscape under the Inkscape section of this forum.

https://www.plasmaspider.com/viewforum.php?f=77

I will take a look at this later and try to give you some ideas on how to approach your specific project. One question is: how much detail do you want and what size do you plan to cut this at? Also what sort of fidelity do you need or want? If you are just doing the outline, then the auto trace could be edited to smooth out the "rough edges" and make a pretty nice cut file. If you are planning to add some of the interior details, then these would need to be manually traced for best results.

Meanwhile, here are a few good videos which demonstrate both auto tracing and manual tracing using Inkscape.

David,

Thank you! appreciate it! From my discussion with him he plans for out line of the cross sabers in the back with some stuff on the front of it. So for now I plan to work on just the outline. On saying that, learning to do the interior detail would be a good skill to learn better.

Thanks for the links, David! I was just talking to Dayna (Nephews wife that does the marker coloring for me) and she is trying to learn Inkscape and I knew you had posted some links before and was going to see if I could find them! I tried Inkscape about 2.5 years ago but was to busy to stick with it and learn! I'll have to check out Y tube too!

Zach - you are making great progress! If you post your Inkscape svg file I will take a look and show you how to edit it to smooth it out and add some of the details you want.

Thanks,

This is besides the point of the thread, but if you are doing anything on the sign that involves the word “cavalry” make sure it’s spelled the way I spelled it in quotations.

Perhaps you ought to be clear about which word you need. Cavalry or Calvary

Zach - here is some information that may be useful to you with your Inkscape edit of your auto trace file. Some might say it would be quicker and easier to simply do a manual trace, but I like your method as well. Since you have not provided you actual svg file, I went ahead and created one from your supplied image of your progress so far. Let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Jeff -you are quite welcome! Inkscape is great fun to use and there are many great instructional videos. Also, Inkscape actually contains a manual with many examples.

Just trying to save you some metal. I did a second amendment wooden flag carve a few years ago and didn’t spell check it. Spelled “constitution” as consitution. One T ruined the whole flag.
