After a good number of years using a Max100 on my CNC cutting bed, I'm looking to update it.
It still works great, with no faults at all and is built like a tank.
But I'd like to find a machine that will pierce 20 - 25mm plate of possible, and would run shielded consumables in the 40A range. It eats 40A unshielded consumables. (good job they are cheap)
I've been looking at a Powermax 125, but I wondered what other people would choose.

I think the 125 would be the best replacement for you if you want to pierce and cut 20-25mm plate. With a minimum amperage of 30 amps it will do well on your thinner materials as well. Let us know what you decide to go with and how it works out fo ryou.

A couple of factors come into play here:
125 requires 480 / 3 ph minimum
105 requires 240 / 3 ph minimum
85 can be run on 240 / 1 or 3 ph
The 105 uses the Duramax torch and consumables, the newer SYNC units requires the new expensive cartridge vs the cheaper individual consumables, The SYNC has also had issues with ohmic THC. The Duramax has 45 amp fine cut consumables for clean lines in thin materiel.
I wanted the 125 for my 6x12 table but upgrading the shop to 480 / 3ph was 15-20K$. The 105 is production pierce rated to 7/8" of an inch but with a slight delay in pierce time 1" is doable with no problems, I have done a lot of 1" with mine and edge cut start on 1-1/4", the ability to have one type of consumables for all 3 of my units is nice and saves on inventory.
Here is my 105 mounted:
1" material (production pierce):
1-1/4" material (edge start) 3/4" work bench (production pierce)

Re: Looking at upgrading from a Hypertherm Max100
Thank you very much for the fast feedback.
Some really good pointers. I like the quality of the 1" and 1-1/4" cuts. Mine will max out at 25mm edge start (250mm/min).
I hope the next machine will be as good as the 1993 Max100. Its sure done some cutting, with only needing a Hf transformer, start button and a gas solenoid.
I've had some quotes today for the Powermax125 with machine torch and I will make a decision tonight.
Thanks again everyone.
