Metal surface conditioning tool

Post by acourtjester »

Here is a tool that may help with metal surface conditioning, remove mill scale and surface rust. Attached are images of a 2" square tube I tried the tool on and was pleased with the result. I have other wheels on order from Eastwood, (60 and 80 Grit interleaf drums).
The tool is from Amazon at $100 with 2 wheels, it has a variable speed knob. It seems to a adaption of a polishing type tool. It remove the mill scale and surface rust on the tube in about 30 second with little effort. The drums from Eastwood have a plastic center and fit on the tool very easily. I did need to file the 2 keyway slots on the tool a small amount for the keys to slide in. They have other drums that they have on sale intermittently like the last one shown one

I have a similar but different brand tool. Use it for different grind finishes. Especially does a nice straight grind for a clean look.

Based on these reviews, I think I will order one to try it out. I like the fact that it will put a "brushed" type finish with straight lines as opposed to the normal grind marks I get with my #80 flap disk. Some of the reviews on Amazon said it was pretty loud compared to a regular grinder, but I guess I will find out.
Thanks,
David

You will really like it David, I don't use it often but when I do I sure appreciate it. Awesome for stainless and aluminum finishing especially.

Thanks! I ordered it last night along with this. The belt sander is not necessarily for plasma parts, but I have wanted one for a long time and decided to pull the trigger. One of the things I love about Amazon is that it is so easy to return an item if I don't like it. This belt sander had great reviews, and I think will work well for some of the "hot rod" stuff I do from time to time.

Thanks! That explains why some of the Amazon reviews talked about how loud is it. I've got several of the Hougen Mag Drills with gear reduction and they too are pretty loud compared to a regular drill. In fact - I wear ear plugs when I use them.
