cutting 1/2 alum
does adding a shielding gas (other than shop air) improve the cut quality for cutting 1/2 alum plate. i am using a hypertherm 1250. if the cut quality improves - what percentage and what gas to use.

The Powermax1250 is a single gas torch...it is designed for use with either air or nitrogen......but you cannot change just the shielding gas......when you switch gases you have to switch both plasma and shield gas.
There are industrial plasma systems that use separate gases for plasma and shield.
That being said.....air will do the best job on aluminum with your Hypertherm plasma. Nitrogen will likely slow doen your cut speeds a bit and will produce a bit more dross.

thanks Jim
There is plenty of room at the top - and the top is where you want to be. Whenever you do a project - do the hardest part first and the rest will be easy.
