Cutting 1/4" stainless with Ultra Cut 300?

Post by xnyehelo »

I use my plasma with is o2/air thermal dynamics ultra cut 300 amp for cutting structural steel up to 3 inch. I was wondering what would happen if I tried to cut a small piece of stainless using the same machine and settings? I know there are different sets of consumables for this, but I only have one piece of 1/4 inch stainless to cut and my bosses dont want to buy a whole set of consumables and tanks of gas to switch over.

when I have cut SS I have used the same settings and consumables as if I was doing the same material in mild steel.. Dont try and cut on the 3" thick settings... As for your boss being cheap tell them to pony up so you can do the job.

What gasses do you use when you cut SS?

Straight compresed air... My machine is an air plasma. unless the machine recommends different gas, I would not substitute.

You can cut stainless with the same gases and consumables that you use to cut mild steel (either oxygen or air).....however expect the edge to be heavily oxidized (black or brownish).....you wull have to experiment with speeds and cut height (arc voltage) in order to get the desired quality in terms of edge angularity and dross.

Of course...the best bet is to follow the specs in the T-D manual for stainless steel cutting....there are a few differnt choices of gases that work quite well with your system.
