Dust collector conversion

Post by trainboy »

Has anyone converted a woodworking dust collector into
a CNC downdraft fume extractor? Wynn Env. makes a
canister filter to replace the cloth bags on these dust
collectors...

I don't believe one of those dust collectors would move enough air volume to keep all the smoke from rising. Not sure what the cfm is on the unit your looking to work with but the ones I have seen just wouldn't cut it.

I have been using a 1500 CFM woodworking dust collector for over 20 years. Threw the bags away and vented it outside thru a dryer vent. Making a major engineering change to vastly increase performance. This works excellent!

I used a Harbor freight 2hp dust collector vented outside on my Torchmate 2x2 table for years it worked great. I decided to go with a 12" ventilation fan on my 4x4 table but I haven't finished installing it to try it out. the 12" fan is supposed to put out 2900 cfm vs. 1200 cfm for the dust collector. personally I feel the dust collector moved more air. To me a fan that requires 2hp should move more air then one that requires a 1/5hp motor. I will find out soon enough.
