It might not be moisture, but that IS one of the first and easiest things to check.
Find some clean, light colored fabric and blow air through it. Satin works exceptionally well, especially a light blue or red.
Moisture will show up easily.
To check for oil/contaminates, use white.

Absolutely,,, Pierce height, pierce time and cutting height will have a definite effect on consumable life.
The moisture test is just a good first step because it is quick and easy.

Warping in 16 ga brings up a lot more questions.
Are your cuts close together?
Adjust your cut sequence from one area to another to let the cut cool before cutting too close to it.
I had a problem with thin metals, and got a spray bottle full of water to follow the cutter, cooling the material quickly.
Are you using small stock?
Cutting too close to an edge will add to warping problems.
