Channel Letter question

When building channel letters do you all prefer to have the metal strip lay on top of the letter or on the side? In the picture if the blue is the metal strip you are forming to give the letter depth, do you prefer the strip to be on the table (or flush with the front of letter) or on top of the letter? Hopefully this makes sense.

I prefer it as shown in your image on the left. Seems easier blend on welded seams without damaging the face of the letter.
