Tumbler

I’ve been thinking about doing away with my Muriatic Acid bath to remove slag and mill scale and have been considering purchasing a cement mixer to use as a giant tumbler. Any thoughts on this/has anyone ever done this?

I've used a cement mixer as a tumbler. Worked much better than the old dryer I also used. Had a slight problem with some parts getting stuck in the agitator, but works great. EXTREMELY loud though. I'd still be using it if it didn't break. It was an old one someone gave me for free.
I don't so much metalwork anymore otherwise I'd probably get one again. I'd figure out some way to keep the noise down though,

I’ve been reading that taking out the agitators and adding a layer of ice and water shield on the outside cuts down on the noise considerably. What medium did you use. Sand, shot blast or something finer like aluminum oxide.

Not suitable for small parts!

nice design on the tumbler, looks like you can follow the progress with the see through grid. What is the diameter of the drum? The ends look like repurposed rubber tires.

there are rubber tires.The drum is 600 x 400 mm in size.
The grid is from the wall which divided East and West Germany 28 years.
The wall stood 100 meters next to my house.

I have found broken ceramic tile works great in my cheapo Harbor Freight mixer. I keep the mixer outdoors to avoid both noise and dust.
