fine cut consumables

Post by BrianMick »

This question is probably for George, I am running a hypertherm 1650 on my samson 5x10 table with a machine torch.
I was wondering if (like the manual says) cutting lets say 10g with the fine cut at 50 amp is better or why does it list 40 or 50 amp settings, and what will this do to life of the consumable? I guess i was on the understanding that they were 40 amp consumables?
Thanks Brian

Hey Brian i use a powermax 1000 with fine cut consumables at 50 amps all the time and get several hundred starts out of a set of consumables, was told by plasmacam tech that it wears them out quicker but I get good cuts and lots of them.............Harold

The FineCut consumables were originally designed for 40 amps in Hypertherms labs. It was found that you could decrease dross formation on some of the thicker materials by simply turning the power level up to 50. You will experience lower nozzle life at 50 amps as compared to 40 amps.....bu in many cases it is worth the loss. The FineCut consumables were developed to create a narrower kerf on materials 1/8" and thinner. You can use the shielded 40 amp consumables on these materials as well, with dramatically longer consumable life (maybe 3 to 4 times!) but with a wider kerf.
