Scrap Material
So I have been saving up my scrap material in hopes of taking to recycle yard and getting enough money to by maybe get an 8x4 sheet or even a 4x4 sheet of 14 gauge. Luckily I called prior to loading this all on a trailer and taking it in. $40 a ton !!!! Not worth even trying to keep the scrap. I think I saw another place offering twice that but still $80 for a ton. This is in California. Is this normal ? What are you guys doing with your scrap ?

Re: Scrap Material
Yes, I would say that's normal all over and also here in Mich. Some of the yards around here hold large piles ( waiting for more$$ ) , smaller yards turn their piles faster. A lot like putting gas in your truck ! HA. You just have to call around. Good Luck!

Re: Scrap Material
I keep a scrap trailer just because I need a place to store my scrap material. When it's full, I run it up to the salvage yard so I can empty it and continue having a place to pile my scrap material. I stop by Taco Bell on the way home, and spend my proceeds on the dollar menu.

Re: Scrap Material
Just sold mine for 6.5 cents a pound. That comes out to $130 per ton.

I have a scrap guy I call when I want mine to disappear. He shows up loads his truck and takes it away.

Re: Scrap Material
I nest my parts pretty close so my skeletons don't weigh much at all. So when my pile is overwhelming it only weighs 500 lbs. For the $30 they give me I have to make a 24 mile round trip, spend an hour checking in and unloading, so rather than spending an hour and a half to net $25, I call the scrap guys to pick it up for free.

Re: Scrap Material
I'm close to DC and the rates vary, depending a lot of location and size of operation. The last time I dealt with my steel scrap it was a giant waste of time, energy and a real health risk. I cut up drops small enough to fit in those 40gal black plastic bins with the yellow tops. They can get heavy fast, even if they are barely full. Never again.
I had a scrap guy stop buy thinking he was going to haul stuff from the previous tenant of my current space. I told him to check back in a couple of months for my steel. I'll probably take time to scrap my Aluminum, but the steel skellys are starting to pile up a bit and I just don't want to deal with all the lifting and driving for a few bucks.
