Ugh. Not cutting straight

Post by gamble »

Cut out a simple rectangle 4.5" x 21". 'Nothing on the inside of it either. One side ends up being 4.5" and the other is 4.25". On the X axis. While it's cutting I don't see the Y moving so it sure how the X axis can be off. .25 is pretty far off.
What am I missing or not seeing here?

Second cut I did 3 of the cuts and paused and let it sit for a fe minutes then finished and that was ok. But it shouldn't warp that much to throw it off like that. Cutting at book speed 187ipm 45 amp, 106volts

Have you checked your steps per inch settings under Config - Motor Tuning? Make sure all of your X, Y and A axis motors have the same value.

Yep! But I will check again. Haven't noticed anything like this on other parts but then again nothing I cut has been this large

With the motors in locked status, (powered but not moving) Grab the axis and try and move them. They should have zero movement. If they do find the source of the play.

Sounds like something is slipping.

I broke the file into 2 pieces next to each other. That cuts fine but when doing it as one cut it was off. Is that weird?

Yup, wierd....I still say something is loose. Probably slipping under higher speeds.

I won't worry about it for now. This design works better as a two piece anyway

Eh it's creeking now. Loud. When I move the Y mainly. Moving it back no big deal but towards me it does. Not sure how to tell if it's the bearings or drive screw. Should I lube them up with oil? Never had this issue before

Does your Y use one motor or two?

I have heard that oil only attracts dust and plasma debris (fine metal). I would say using a dry lubricant graphite would be fine, but I would not add any kind of oil on the bearings.

Not saying this is your problem, but it's what happened to me.

One of my motors on the Y axis had the directional control wire come loose out of the butt splice so it was intermittently trying to turn in the wrong direction that was causing noises much like what you're describing. I lowered both motors from the rack and watched them while I manually jogged until I figured out which one it was and redid all of the wires where they were spliced and it fixed the problem.

I think there was a bad batch of motors when I bought mine last January. I had another motor do the same thing that I sent back and got a replacement for. When it popped up the second time I figured it was worth a shot to resplice the connections myself before I sent it back and it worked for me.

Like I said, your problem could be completely different but when my motors tried spinning opposite directions it made some pretty strange noises. Just something for you to check.

Thanks for the reply! I sprayed some wd40 on each bearing and no more noise. So now it's time to take them all off and clean them and reinstall them. Or I may just replace them since they are cheap.
