Drawing help question

Post by FiveORacing »

I'm making a basic gas can holder for my trailer. My question is: After I make the bends at the front, how much do I need to lose on the edges of the bottom and and back so that they meet in the middle, and not overlap. In my drawing the back and bottom wings are currently half of the front panel, but I think after bending I will be overlapping at the weld joints.
Or another way of asking (and perhaps a better way) is: If I want to keep the original width of the front panel, how much should I widen it for each bend. Hope this makes sense. :o
I'm gonna use 11 gauge.

Not sure how to make this show up as a picture.

Okay, now after looking at the drawing I realize I may not have to trim the back pieces because I'll lose the same amount in the front and back bends, but because the bottom bends are in a diferent direction, they may be too wide?

The drawing looks good, depending how you bend the bottom, if it is to tight you can run the cutting wheel down the joint or if have a bit of a gap weld will fill it. You will probably gain or lose 1/8" with the bends just make sure you do it the same for both sides, :| Are these to cantileaver off the side or how are you mounting them? Just wondering why you need to use 11ga? If it is just to contain then 14ga would be lots.
I have converted the file to a single cutpath for you, see attached.
I hope this helps.

Thanks Lee. The original thought was to fold them under and weld them so the design could be used to hang on a wall as well, so I thought 11 ga. For screwing down to a deck the bottom could be shortened folded in or out. The size is not final yet, I was just trying to nail down a design and then adjust it to fit the container.

Hey no problem, great idea all the way around. The file adjustment to make different sizes should be easy.

Your drawing looks good! I have been in drafting for over 20 years, and If I remember correctly, you deduct one half the material thickness for each 90 degree bend. Any Steel Detailers out there that can confirm this?
Good looking project! A final picture when you get finished would be great.
Thanks!

if you are going by inside measurments you do not subtract anything, if you are going by outside measurments you subtract the full thickness once for each bend.

bend.gif
mark distance A, make a test bend , measure B and C

C = outside bend line offset

A - B = bend length compensation = Z

then to bend something B tall, you will need B + Z material beyond the bend line

and the bend line would be set back C from the desired outside dimension

For a V-press bender
v-bend.gif
determine mat'l legth A, make a test bend, measure B and C

Z = B + C - A

you will need Z / 2 extra material on each side of each bend line
