Why am I getting loads of slag on cuts? cutting 1/4 inch steel tried speeding up - changed tips etc etc any ideas ???

Hypertherm .com settings 85 amp and 160 per min for 1/4 inch steel . I was running 45 amp at 60 per min ant thoughts

Per my manual 1/4 mild steel Best quality setting with 85 amp shielded consumables 130 cut speed and 123 volts, production cut 160 cut speed at 126 volts. With 85 amp unshielded consumables 125 cut speed at 120 volts for best cut quality, for production cutting 160 cut speed at 119 volts.

just seen you said you were running 45 amp consumables unshielded cut speed 48 volts 127, Shielded 48 cut speed at 137 volts.

There are many pages of mechanized cut charts in the Powermax85 operators manual. My advice is to use the shielded mechanized consumables...not the unshielded parts. Then choose the power level for 1/4" that gives you the best desired results...your choices are 45 amp shielded, 65 amp shielded and 85 amp shielded. Hypertherm's shielded consumables cut with better quality and last longer than the unshielded parts.

The lowest powered cut process (that the cut charts suggest will cut 1/4") is 45 amp shielded. Looking at the manual....it suggests torch to work distance of .06" (cut height), initial pierce height of .15", "Best Quality" cut speed of 48 inches per minute, and a suggested arc voltage (if your height control system has an arc voltage setting) of 137 volts. This will give you your best cut quality on 1/4" steel.

You can also cut with the 65 amp shielded process....again, follow the suggested specs in the 65 amp shielded cut charts for 1/4" and you will see the correct pierce height, cut height, pierce delay and speed settings. This process (65 A) will cut faster than the 45 amp (90 IPM), but with a little more edge taper.

Same drill with the 85 amps shielded process. Use the charts in your manual....130 IPM, nice clean cut but more edge taper.

Lower amperage consumables cut slower, but with squarer edges, higher amperage will cut with less chance of dross at higher speeds, more edge taper. Speed and height are absolutely critical. Cut too slow and/or with too much power and you will get dross, warpage, and an ugly cut.

Jim my torch tip will contact the plate at certain times and ruin the piece, could raising the amperage fix this problem. I follow the setting in the manual.
