Steel Prices

Post by wlockwood23 »

What is everyone giving for material? I live in Southern Illinois and wonder if I'm getting a decent deal or overcharged on material compared to others. These are all 48 x 96 sheets

cold rolled
12ga-$72.80
14ga-$52

hot rolled
11ga-$53.54
14ga-$38

I can buy 1 sheet at a time. They deliver free if I buy $50 worth and I never buy less than that. I get delivery 5 days a week. I do have another supplier who is cheaper but they only deliver twice a week in my area.

That's great pricing. Where are you located and who are you purchasing from?

Wow, you guys are getting some good prices. I am paying about $48 for 14 gauge 4x8,cut in half, for hot rolled steel here in Ft. Lauderdale.

What's the advantage to cold rolled?

No mill scale, for one. That has not been a huge issue for me so far, but if I start powder coating (and have to remove all the mill scale), I may go cold-rolled. It appears I'll have to special order it, as the local suppliers all stock HR only.

I thought I was getting a great deal but maybe not after reading this
14g P&O steel cut to 2x2 sections is $14/each which is $112 a sheet. I was paying about $25 each 2x2 piece from online metals.

You are always going to pay more for smaller sheared sizes. Where I go they charge a shear charge and handling charge for small pieces.
For instance I can buy a 4x8 sheet of 1/4" for $189 but just went to purchase a 36"x48" piece of 1/4" and paid $80 for just that piece.

I understand but thats a lot of coin for someone to step on the foot pedal for the shear. The first few times they didn't even want to shear it, they tossed it on the laser and cut it that way

You are not looking at the big picture. Just like most people think we plop a piece of steel on the table and push a button, out pops an art piece that we charge too much for.
They have to move the steel, forktruck (expense), operator (expense), set it up on the shear (expense), stomp on foot pedal, pick piece up off floor behind shear, move to storage rack or your truck. Now you could buy all the equipment and do it yourself and save a ton of money!!!!
I tend to look at it, as it is what it is, as long as I can recoup my costs in the price of the end product, the price is irrelevant.

16GA CRS 48x96-$43
14GA CRS 48x120-$68
11Ga HRS 48x96-$70.40

This is delivered to my shop. Company has a 500 pound minimum. Same price as company I used to use, but had to pickup. Was pretty much a no brainer as I had to drive an hour to pickup from previous supplier.

I bought some 16 ga 4x10 recently for $45/sheet.
14 ga 4x10 $72.
11ga 4x8 $65.
3/16" 4x8 $135.
1/4" 4x8 $166.

All of these are delivered with a $4 per delivery fuel surcharge. I'm about 20 minutes drive from the supplier.
