Re: Weather vane
Question on weather vanes, windmills, ect. Do you use bearings for the rotating parts? I would like to make some weather vanes but not sure how to secure the rotating part and if bearings are needed. Thanks for any help.

Re: Weather vane
danny, i've made a few with a very complicated bearing system that work vey well. the slightest breeze moves them. but very cost effective. but i saw on a home show a weathervain beening installed. i'll try to explain as simple as the ideal. you have two pipes. inside being small and attaching to the roof. the height of the pipe will be the bottom of the arrow. the outer pipe is connected to "vain" is comes down to the top of your N-S-E-W. you need enough lengh to keep it form going airborn maybe 12". on top of the inside pipe you place a ball bearing large enough to not fall through the pipe. yet small enough you can slide the outer pipe over it. i.e. 1/2" pipe, 1/2" bearing, 3/4" pipe. the top of the bearing need to ride on a flat surface to acheve the spinning motion, cap the pipe some how. then apply grease. hope i made that simple.

Re: Weather vane
I make mine with no bearings. I take a pipe, with an I.D. a little bigger than 1/2", about 4-6 inches long, and weld it to the Rooster part of the vane. Then I take the garden stake which is made from 1/2" solid about 5 feet high, and grind a point on the end. The contact point is so small that it has no problem spinning. After a while though if you don't throw some grease on it, it does squeak.
I weld my compass letters to the garden stake.

Those look a little squished to me so I thought I'd repost the originals I posted:

Re: Weather vane
I do something simular, I use some 3/4 OD x .120 wall x .510 ID DOM tubing that I get from http://www.metalsdepot.com/products/hrs ... cc=$LimAccScratch wrote:I make mine with no bearings. May be a little pricy, but it is a nice fit on the 1/2" rod.
