Pmax 65 1.125" Thick
Anyone tried this or have any advice on cutting 1 and an eighth thick carbon steel? Any help would be much appreciated. I would assume edge start for sure.

Re: Pmax 65 1.125" Thick
I just recently cut .75 T1 steel with my PM45 with awesome results. BTW, that's a full .25inch thicker than the PM45 is rated for or 150% better... your PM65 should have enough power to push .125 past book limitations (only 12%) , especially since Hypertherm only rates to 80% of capacity.
Just use Hypertherm Book specs with good ground, clean dry air and brand new, fresh consumables.

Re: Pmax 65 1.125" Thick
i have only cut to 1" with my pm65. basically edge start or drill a hole and set it at or extrapilated form book specs. i think the book stops at 1".
however remember your duty cycle i believe you can get to about 40" of cut before needing a rest. i recently had a job that needed 1300" of cut 1" material... i went a bought an oxy-fuel torch, might not be a bad option

What he said. I run my at 8" per min with a .15 overcut on 1", I don't think you will have any problem depending on your cut length.

Re: Pmax 65 1.125" Thick
I have cut 1.125 with my Torchmate and PM65 and it worked really well. As said above edge start or drill. During the test I cut at 65 amps, 6IPM and the water high in the pan. But for the actual job I cut at 8IPM and lowered the water about 1 inch below. Link below for facebook page video.

Re: Pmax 65 1.125" Thick
A good point brought up about the water. I bought a small water pump attached a hose that I use to run water on top of the metal. I was cutting 1"x10" wide material. The hose works good for keeping things cool and not moving on the table. The pump also works well for cutting tubing on the table as well.

Well today is the day, will post pics tomorrow of how it does. Right now I'll only be cutting one part and machining it for fit up.

Re: Pmax 65 1.125" Thick
I always liked how the lower amp consumables work with thicker metal,, be it in a Esab,Victor or Hypertherm. 70 amps in the others. I have not cut 1.225 with my Hypertherm, but my friend does it with his 85.. Most cuts come out nice, but for true consistent cutting, he sticks with O/A
He will be doing fine, and then plasma issues show up, and he has to scrap the part.. That is why I have a 65 instead of a 85.. Smith machine O/A and O/P are my go to thick setup. At least I know you can go over 1.00 with the hyper on one or two cuts without issues.
Nice job too.
