Cutting 3/16 plate

Post by Bobcat320 »

Another question for you all on here with much more experience!
I can cut 1/8", 1/4" and 3/8" plate all day long, no issues. When I cut 3/16" plate I have to stand by the machine at all times to make sure the cut height stays correct. If I don't, the torch will either creep up or down and drag on the plate (which is when I seem to get plugged shield holes) :x . I am running PM65 with 65A consumables, all set to book specs. Have tried adjusting various settings, doesnt seem to matter.

I have asked a couple of other shops in my general area if they have this issue with 3/16 plate, both have said yes - that for some reason 3/16" "confuses" the machine?

Anyone else have this issue or have ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Carl

I cut a fair amount of 7ga on my table. Cuts very nice. Could it be a supplier issue?

I have been wondering that as well. The next time I pull a sheet of it I am going to see where it is made.

I've been cutting 3/16 with my PM65 using fine cut consumables. I use the 1/8" setting just slowing the speed down to 80% of the 1/8". I'm getting pretty good cuts. I'll post some pics later tonight

I have been cutting fire pits and just cut four inserts for drive way gates out of 3/16 and have had no problems. I am using a PM65 with 65 amp consumables. I cut at 65 amps and 125 inch per minute. I was cutting faster but found some of my cuts would not go all the way through, slowed to 125 IPM and it cuts great.

I have the PM45. I cut 3/16 at 45amps at 75IPM (no height control) and I get beautiful cuts.
My standard consumables I guess would be equal to your fine cut ones
Torchmate 2x2 - Flashcut
Powermax 45 - Machine torch
Taig CNC Mill - Flashcut

My height control always works the same regardless of material thickness. It cuts from 26 gauge thru 1". Whenever I have had issues.....it is operator error. I set something wrong...maybe decimal place in the wrong location!

Height control for plasma uses arc voltage feedback to control torch height. It has no idea or concern about material thickness, but controls heigh based on the length of the plasma arc, which is directly proportional to the arc voltage.

Only thing I can think......is the 3/16" small pieces and making poor electrical contact to the machine slats? Is it painted or primed?

Thanks Jim!
No, it happens even on a solid new sheet. I have never actually measured the height though. I have just set everything on the computer and assumed the machine was doing what I told it to. So, this weekend I am going to actually measure it and see what is going on.
