Fireplace Screen - quick question

Post by engine_boy »

Not sure where to post this ...

I have been asked to build a fireplace screen. I have not made one of these yet.

- What type and size screen should I use?
- What is a good method of attaching it to the Frame?

Thanks a bunch.

I've bought some from McMaster-Carr. It's called wire cloth. I've used the 1/8" hole, I think it's 24 holes per inch.

I spot welded it to the frame on the back side and it worked great, but you could also sandwich it.

What material did you use - Steel or Stainless Steel? Also, was it woven or punched holes?

Thanks

I used their regular steel, woven wire mesh

This is one I made recently. I used this part# from MCMaster Carr: http://www.mcmaster.com/#9219t376/=9zjwl0

I used that because I thought I needed to go with thin wire to see clearly through it. I would strongly recommend going with a size with a little more "structure". This one was thin enough that it was a little wavy, but thick enough that it was a huge pain to try and stretch as I put it on. In reality, the size I used was pretty hard to even notice from more than a few feet away. I really think you can get good results with a little more substantial mesh, and it will be much easier to put on.

Also, I used carbon steel as it all got powder coated together.
