Question for those of you out there that run the PowerMax Machines: I just upgraded to the PM65 with a machine torch and have been using the 65 amp consumables that came with it, cutting mostly 16ga. Trying to learn the new machine and its capabilities, which is a HUGE improvement over my Miller 375. In the thinner steel like this, will I be better off switching to the Fine Cut consumables?
Thank you in advance for any advice you can give!

Yes sir it will have a narrower kerf but don't use the long life electrode with the fine tips. Hypertherm® Model 220777 Electrode

Smaller nozzle and less amperage will always provide better cut quality than the larger ones. I use Finecuts on everything under 10 gauge.....unless I need higher speeds and can live with more edge angularity...then I will use the 45 amp shielded or larger.

ha bobcat
i have a 2*4 torchmate machine with a pm85.
i cut 16ga with the following settings and get good cuts.
Fine Cut consumables
i set my amps at 30
ipm at 76
voltage at 84v
i probable could have a lower voltage and get the tip closer to the plate but no problems yet.
torchmate is limited by a 150ipm speed.

Jim, If fine cut is up to 10gauge where do you draw the line between 45 amp consumables and 65 amp consumables?jimcolt wrote:Smaller nozzle and less amperage will always provide better cut quality than the larger ones. Re: Hyperthem PM65 & Fine Cut Consumables
I stick with the 45 amp shielded consumables all the way down to 26 gauge if the parts I am cutting do not have small holes and fine details. My machine can cut at 450 ipm on thin materials without a lot of detail. 45 amps shield parts will always provide longer consumable life as compared to Finecut.
If the parts are below 10 gauge and have fine detail, small holes or require the best accuracy...then Finecut is my choice. I have been known to use Finecut on 3/16" and 1/4" for best accuracy.....though there are bo cutting specs in the Hypertherm manual, and I expect shorter nozzle fife due to piercing issues on anything above 10 gauge.

Re: Hyperthem PM65 & Fine Cut Consumables
I have been running Finecut with my PM65 lately on 3/16 HRS at 65 Amps 90 IPM. Almost no DROSS, only at the pierce point honestly.
It DOES shorten the life of the consumables but I get better cuts and A Set of Consumables is $11.40
I generally cut 18 Ga these days at 45 Amps... 180 IPM Also with little to no DROSS...
I am running 85-90 volts on the THC...
