Water table height

Hey Jim, a question for you about water tables, what's the best height to run that water from the plate being cut?????? I'm sure hypertherm has tested this lots......

Best cut quality is when the water is low enough so there is no splash on the plate....water touching the plate can cause edge roughness and more dross. Unfortunately....when the water is low, expect smoke to billow out of the table. If fume control is most important, the water should just touch the bottom of the material for best results.

In my shop you will find one table with downdraft (no water) and the other machines have a hybrid fume control with a water tray 8 inches below the plate, downdraft on the sides of the water tray, and large welding fume filters that the downdraft uses.....no venting outside, no effects of water, no smoke.

On larger industrial plasma's...typically 200 amps to 800 amps....we submerge the torch underwater...generally 2 to 4 inches below. No fumes, and just a bubbling sound!

There should be many videos of underwater plasma cutting online. It has been a common solution for industrial plasma's since the water table was patented (early 1970's by Hypertherm)!
